Box Stands for Deer Hunting

Grand daughter is spoiled. Whatever it takes to get them in the stand hunting tho. Her second youth deer at 10. Think she's hooked.

A motivated child is a real treat to guide for. My first experience was enlightening that I had to set them up better for the shot and not just put a deer in front of them. A nervous child isn’t easy with firing a first shot on a deer with a center fire rifle. I had to rehearse them and prepare for the shot or suffer the disappointment with them. It’s definitely harder than I thought it was until I tried it and also the best part of the hunting season!

Yes its very frustrating when you know YOU can make a shot easily and the target deer would be harvested. When you are with the youth hunter, that's not the case. Most opportunities lost due to the inexperienced hunter not able to aquire the deer in the scope or get off the shot before that animal leaves that position. Happened several times last weekend.

My first time taking my son was hilarious, a buck walked up to the stand in the dark and he turned to me and said “I hear footsteps”. All hell broke loose right there. Lol so then we moved to another stand and I rattled up a good youth buck right behind him and he thought I was kidding around when I pointed to look. He nailed it right in the boiler after aiming forever at it. Luckily the buck was too curious! It was a special morning by the grace of God! The brush was very thick over there and I was reluctant to try that stand but we were running out of time and opportunities. These box stands seem to be a big help with getting them to endure a long wait and for providing a rest. A bag of popcorn doesn’t hurt either! Lol

When my kids were this age, the electronics age wasn't upon us. Now the grand daughters have the I pads and pods, ear plugs etc. Alot tougher to get them schooled in the game but seems easier to keep them in the stand with those at there finger tips. They do want to shoot a buck tho and are very eager but when the deer do not participate, the toys come out. Nothing wrong with that I guess. It just is what it is today. My rule is at meals, no electronics period. At bedtime, they get turned off. It's really hard for me to make that same rule in the blind. I want to keep them in there and with interest so I guess I'm caving on that one.

Pretty slick. How high of the ground is that ?

Floor 12’ so around 18’ top of walls. Decided to keep this one lower so to see under the canopy better and make things less death defying to put together... we had the roof on in just over a hour and half from arriving. One hour to set up ropes and explain the plan to my son. Went smooth thanks to him!
He was smiling and pretty happy to be a important part of the project!

Mike,
Thanks for sharing that. A lot of skill and talent in that tree stand and I'm sure you will enjoy the comforts it provides while you are hunting out of it.
Could you share some pictures of the interior please ?
Thanks,
George

Right now it’s just studs and T&G 2x6 floor. Needs the glass before carpet and 2 corner shelves. The other 2 corners will have a funnel in one and heater the other. It may be next year before completely finished. I will take some pictures of 6x8 for you next time I get out there. I have 2 others that are finished, but it’s hard to take interior pics in a confined area. I will try

Thanks Mike. We have some very nice stands also, like yours, but I'm always interested in improving the interiors. We usually build a 5X5 floor, 7' interior heights so we can stand up comfortably, and have some extra shelves up high for storage. We set ours up with some shooting rests inside and outside so we can shoot about as accurately as shooting off a bench....We have tried several different methods over the past 25 years and feel like we have something now about as good as we can imagine.
Thanks again for the great pictures and explainations….

It’s always work in progress, weatherproof is priority #1 , but functionality is the hunting methods used. I bow and rifle from these so I prefer the 4 panel sliding window for control but my 2 track design isn’t weather proof by any means. I like the center windows open during bow so sliders are necessary for this. I will black out the ceiling area for disclosure and by wearing dark clothing when I hunt. I’m just glad to get it covered before fall rain but I bet I sit in it this year!

Just ordered the glass, can’t have a unfinished project.

Maybe a bit more accenting with the rattle can, but otherwise ready to hunt!

I like forged in fire as well. Mine is back up from getting blown over. Rebuilt the steps. Gonna take some carpet up there this pm. Maybe a cup holder or two.
