Berger 7mm 190gr long range hybrid

So, are you guys finding the 7mm 190's to be superior to the 180's or 184's? thx.
Did a couple strings with them so I have a lot more experience with 180s but they look good so far. 2850 with rl 23 and 2770 with h4831sc in a 284 held as good vertical as 180s but they do seem to be a bit less affected by wind. I’m finding they work better jam than jump.

Berger nailed it with this one. Berger’s claim of under 1% BC variation out of the box is not just a tag line.

The 180’s, especially, and the 184’s greatly benefit from repointing the tips. They may benefit from sorting as well.

The 190’s are not only factory tipped but loadable straight out of the box. I see no more benefit down range from trying to sort these than trying to improve their tips.

The question mark to me had been how would they compare to retipped 195’s, which, at least before the A-Tips if not still, led the 7’s in wind bucking.

From my experience so far at the pressure where the 190’s and their brass both seem to be the happiest at 1,000 yards, they do not threaten to shoot “inside” tipped 195’s also optimally loaded.

However, they are as close a substitute as I have seen, and I have seen zero reports of one being blown up from a hot barrel. The possibility of a -10 is an unacceptable risk, and that risk is real in a magnum case with a 195 and hot barrel, as several of us know.

Rsaum, Sherman 7ss and 284 all seem like good options.

They all can work, (I’ve shot 195’s from .284’s since released and maybe should have never strayed) the key is to pick slower powders as the bullet weight goes up.

I know this sounds roughshod but if you can keep the pressure peak constant between two powder choices, say an H and an Reloader, according to brass and primer, and one choice permits more grains of weight while the other permits fewer, you’ll probably get more velocity from the powder choice that was the greater amount without penalty, given our long barrels. I do consider that principle and then refine from there. Reloader may have more energy grain for grain, though, which may matter if compression becomes a limiter. (57.0 grains of RE 25 - 195H gives many .284 brass reloads and virtually the “standard” performance of a typical RSAUM in very long barrels.)

Yeah I’ve tried rl23 and h4831sc in the 284 and the rl23 can get another 75-100 FPS in speed without pressure signs. H4831sc seems to get pressured out much sooner.

190s at 2860 jammed 15k with rl23 out of a straight 284. Forgive the wind calls it was a gusty day with no flags. Should of been a 10 shot string but I was over the target compared to my 184 load at 2820, took 4 minutes to center back up. Shot the same load at a 600 match and it started throwing a few fliers on the second half of the string, came down 0.1 and it held the whole string.

Yes, and around 100 feet per second is the difference between a given cartridge, and the next full size up.

excellent feedback.. thx.

Usually I would add the 7-300 wsm, but I don’t know where to get good brass consistently, I will be using Remington brass next

my new reamer is at the gunsmith now.....increased FB, will get back at it once it is done

So, with a big magnum shooting low round counts at say 1,500 yards plus.
Would you chose the Berger 190, 195 or the 197gr SMK?
