NEW! Berger 308 bullet with wicked 0.328 G7 BC!

I will then trim, point and then sort by BTO
Which Whidden tipping insert should be used? Checking the Whidden site they just show the "0" for Berger 200 Target which is what I've used for the 200 Hybrids. That could mean either they are both the same or that they haven't covered it yet.
Thanks.

#1 pointing die insert for the 200.20X, nose is essentially the same as the 215. That's what I've been using and it works well. The #0 insert is a little too wide/stubby for the 200.20X meplat, IMO.

Thank you Greg. Just realized I've been using the 1 on 200 Hybrids. That's what is shown in the printed list that came with my Whidden pointing set.
Now I recall why I had to buy all three - 0 for the 185 Juggs, 1 for the 200 Hybrid and 2 for the 175 MK's I used in my Savage practice rifle.

Kind of interesting that the online list showed only a 0 for 200 Berger Target. Clearly their list on their site could use a little update and detail added. Of course it's another reason we check everything, particularly by asking on this forum.

The "0" is what I am using and it is working for me.

As I've pointed out on several occasions here in various threads, the difference between the #0 and #1 inserts is fairly subtle. The #0 insert has a slightly shorter, fatter cone as compared to the #1 insert. Using the #0 insert on a bullet such as the 200.20X, which essentially has the nose of the 215 Hybrid, only means that the point will transition slightly more abruptly to the ogive as compared to the #1 insert. Although you can visually detect a slight difference between bullets pointed using the two different inserts, I strongly doubt you could reliably shoot the difference. Pointing with either one will improve the BC. I used the #1 insert simply because that is what Whidden recommends for the 215 Hybrid. After pointing a few, I could tell from the relatively smooth transition of the point to the ogive that it was the probably the best choice for the 200.20Xs. Although I have no doubt the #0 insert would work as well, I can tell from visual inspection that the points would have a "steeper" cone and transition into the ogive a little more abruptly. But again, I doubt I could ever shoot the difference, they just look a little prettier.

With the 200h and 200.20x what percentage of the hollow points are you guys closing when pointing thease bullets, when i point i like to measure over all bullet Length and batch according to length so as to keep pointing as even as possible.

I have gotten different results each time I've setup to do three different bullets before I did 200 of the 200.20x last week. In the past I had setup to lightly tip and worked my way tighter and would typically get about 60%.
This time I started where I had left off for 200H's and could feel the die wouldn't close without "bending". So I backed off until I could feel the die close smoothly. I was amazed it had closed to near pin hole size. Since this was so much further than I had done in the past I backed off another .020 and focused on the importance of consistency over how sharply I shaped the tip.
Then I carefully did another 5 bullets and I was pleased with how smooth (used Imperial wax lube) everything went. I didn't measure before and after but my estimate is 85-90% closed with no sign of bending or distortion.

CH Luke I believe the BC increases ever so slightly as the pointing percentage increases however i would carefully check that the bullet base is not been crushed slightly when the pointing increases close to 80-90% i check using a bullet ogive to base comparator,
Have you noticed the bullets that are pointed in the 80-90 percent region perform best at 1000y distances and yield least vertical.

Appreciate the tip on crushing Paul. Will certainly add that to my knowledge base.

Since I had pre-sorted by base to shoulder in .0005" increments it was easy to check. I could detect zero change with 5 chosen at random from samples ranging from the beginning to the end of the 200 20x bullets I just pointed at 80-90%.

In response to your 2nd paragraph I'm not certain if you were making a statement or asking a question. Unfortunately I have not fired the new 20x's. Just planning to measure "touch" and do a small range of charge testing this weekend pending how the forecasted snow turns out.

The two 1000 yard ranges I have access to here in MI are even further north and closer in to the snow belt. It will likely be March before I see that range. I had not tested various tip closure rates but would be interested in hearing anyone's results doing so. Also about any base to shoulder variance testing so I can determine if or how much I need to work in that.

Frankly I was pleased with my 200 Hybrid load's vertical at 1000 this past season with the tip closed at 60%. At that range reading wind and working on my positioning to control horizontal were my best opportunities for improvement. That and there were some really good shooters on the line each time so I'm looking for every edge.

What I found interesting was it seemed to me that having started from too far down (as I described above) and lightly touching the tip to determine it would distort the it then backing off several times allowed me to get a better "feel" than my previous setups starting way too light and gradually working down.

It is looking like after the Holidays right now. Lots and lots of things going on.

It would be nice now Doc. Especially with the 55 degree day here in SE Michigan today! Got some quality time at 600 yards today comparing my new loads on 185 Hybrid and 200-20X for my new barrel.
Interesting to note significant improvements in SD on the 20X as pointed out here (2623/ 4.0SD) and the near identical vertical scope setting with the Juggs (2729/ 3.8SD).

It is probably going to be a couple of weeks. In the middle of a training session, and they are sending guys over to Finland/Norway etc for some learning experiences.

Hey Doc
Just checked the bullet library for my iOS app and the 200.20X is there. 600 yard practice tomorrow morning (looks like 55 degrees!) so perfect timing.
Thanks!

Yeah, lots of folks looking forward to the unseasonable warm-up this weekend!
