Ballistol — User Reviews Wanted

Agree completely.

It's particularly useful with ball powder loads in this role. Leave the fouling on the case-neck with some ball-grades for more than a few minutes and it'll set like concrete making it hard to clean off later. A patch or piece of paper kitchen towel with a corner moistened with Ballistoil removes such fouling effortlessly if done soon enough.

(Many other cleaners / lubes do this too, but Ballistoil is the most effective I've tried so far.)
 
I use it primarily for a damp patch followed by a dry patch between shots with muzzleloaders. Keeps fouling consistent and you could shoot all day without a complete cleaning.
 
I feel like its a must for black powder shooting. Many mix it with water to make a concoction called moose milk. Best thing about it is it emulsifies with water. I clean black powder guns with water and then rub down with Ballistol. I'll also occasionally use it on other guns and equipment if they've been out in the rain or damp conditions.
 
Another satisfied user. It works great for spraying down a revolver after shooting it, to clean the carbon off the cylinder and frame. I've never seen it touch copper fouling but it works pretty good on carbon fouling and I don't feel bad if I spray it on wood, the bench or where ever.
 
Good stuff. If I'm not going to use a gun for a bit I wipe it down with It and I don't have to worry about it rusting. Use it to lube my press etc. Does a good job removing carbon from cases/ guns. Doesn't matter what you get it on it won't hurt wood, leather or rubber. As others have said it does have a rather strong odor that some people can't stand.
 
A non shooting FYI:

Ballistol promotes it as a cleaning agent for wood stove glass doors on stubborn soot.

Tried it today.....didn't work. It didn't faze the hard carbon like soot. However I did not let it soak on the glass since it was still warm and would have evaporated.
 
gosh. sounds like the product may be too good to be true. I heard of the lube/solvent in a Hickok45 video. I have used "brand X" when cleaning my bp revolvers Figured it wouldn't hurt to ask what other shooters think.

Well, it has been around for over 100 years, so must have a lot going for it. Unlike many modern lubricants, it has no silicon content, so doesn't see gummy residues build up over time.
 
I have used B as a light lube and preservative. I like that it does not harm wood. I read the post in this thread about it working on carbon. I had my 6bra on the cleaning cradle with the fluffy carbon gone and no copper present. But some harder carbon remained. I gathered the fore with B. Left it sit 12 hours. Ran a bronze brush through 4 passes 1 way. Ran a dry patch through and it had a very light gray cast. Looking with the fore scope showed a very minor improvement...maybe. I ran 1 patch of Hopped followed by 8 strokes with Iosso. Borescoped......Looks like new. In my mind it is not a cleaning solvent but I will continue to use as stated earlier.
 
Meh. I think of Ballistol about the same as I do about Hoppes #9. Adequate, but no more. It does have more uses than Hoppes, though. Great for use on handguns.
For serious rifle cleaning I use Butch's Bore Shine and/or Kroil.
