I used/bought Kroil twice; first and last time. I could not figure out what the hype was all about, and it is more expensive than other options. After that, I saw a Youtube video from "Project Farm" testing various penetrants. Liquid Wrench fared better in their testing. It is also available nearly everywhere, AND cheaper.

Funny how reactions differ from using the various cleaning agents. For me, Ballistol odor is not overwhelming. Kroil on the other hand takes my breath away and lingers in my nasal cavity for a long time-actually produces a gag reaction. BBS I can tolerate if sessions are not too long, but considering going back to Hoppes # 9 now that I have a borescope to verify bore condition. As far as it's usefulness, I have only used it for a limited time and appears to work as claimed.

Ballistol is okay imo. Made famous by Youtuber Hickok 45. I like that the product is water soluble and non toxic but I'm not a fan of the smell. Not going to say it is the best thing in the world but I have no reason to complain. I tend to shoot a lot of black powder, cap & ball so a good lube/penetrating oil is always appreciated. Oddly enough I'm not so concerned about the Colt clones which are all cartridge guns when it comes to cleaning. I'm glad this topic has come up again.

Balliostol was famous well before Youtube.

I use it mostly for shot gunning: cleaning bores, chokes, and wiping down wood stocked guns after a round of clays, don't use it on rifles or pistols, I feel there are better products to clean fouling out of rifled bores, smell doesn't bother me, everyone's different
