Ballistol — User Reviews Wanted

I use aerosol Ballistol at the range to wipe the carbon off my brass after each relay. I spray it on a patch and wipe.

Then when I reload I wipe the case again before FL sizing. With my 6BR rounds and good dies, that is sufficient case lube. YMMV.

I don’t need to tumble and don’t need to use a thick, sticky case lube.

Again, I caution that I remove the carbon BEFORE it hardens — wiping the cases off minutes after shooting.

For reloading larger cases you may need a thicker lube.

So it can double as Armor All
not as shiny but definitely protects it and renews it, works very well on wiper blades to keep them pliable and slow down the dry rot. Use it on battery terminals, to cut the built up grease and grime from parts, etc. better than WD-40 and it wont gum up when it dries. Their website has 1000's of uses and they haven't been wrong yet on anything I tried it on. the smell is quite strong and some people are more adverse to it than others, it makes me want to cough pretty hard, but it does go away shortly after its applied. Kills the corrosive salts in barrels, emulsifies in water, when the water evaporates the oil is left behind, will soften hard carbon, and is great for old milsurps, safe for wood, leather, etc. And its non toxic. you could drink it. Is it the best thing going for guns? no. but it has alot of usefulness in the shop or house.

You can also use it for wounds. From their website:

"At the turn of the 20th century, the German Imperial Army demanded the impossible. They challenged Friedrich Klever and his son Dr. Helmut Klever, a professor of chemistry, to create a unique, multipurpose oil. This new oil had to clean, lubricate and protect:

  • The metallic parts of guns and rifles
  • The wooden stocks of guns and rifles
  • Soldiers’ leather gear
Oh, and it also had to serve as a wound oil for minor injuries, lacerations and bruises."

Ballistol is amazing stuff. I always have some on hand. Like mentioned above there is lots of uses for it but it works really well as a penetrant as well. Whenever I am removing a barrel I always spray some into the front scope base hole and let it sit for a bit before removing and it always makes the job way easier. The down side is it does smell like a sweaty butt in June.

I like it for multiple things.
I actually started using it years ago mixed with water 50/50 for BP. It worked way better and easier than any of the concoctions I tried.

I find the smell interesting much like I do of Hoppes #9. I was raised on #9, used it for after shave when I was chasing women, figured if one of them liked it she would be a keeper. Should have stayed the coarse there and would probably still be married lol.
