That was A Fatty for sure. Wowza
You might want to cut it open to see what is inside. We killed a big one like that at our dove field last year; had 13 little ones inside right ready to be born.
Also, took both of my sons PD shooting this year (43 & 47) and the younger one wanted to go out and inspect the carnage after his first day of PD shooting. Found a nice big prairie rattler coiled up by a PD hole with a PD inside. I have shot PD's with those folks for the past 15 years or so and this is the first snake I have ever seen.

They are rare in Vermont but I'm not sure but I thought Wisconsin was the only state in the lower 48 that does not have poisonous snakes. Or maybe it was Maine. If I'm not mistaken you have pigmy Rattlers, though their name might need to be changed 'cause it's "waisist".Ok guys... it’s official! I love Vermont!
Yeah, maybe you'll see ex-gov Cuomo slithering across in shame to retire in a less oppressive state like VT.You are right. i believe the south western side of the state has rattlers. I always thought they were NY politicians slithering across the border.
What a great time to kill him! That joker blends right in.View attachment 1271831
Rattlesnake versus prairie dog.
Wisconsin has Timber Rattlers (the snakes) and a minor league baseball team named Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. They are rare in Vermont but I'm not sure but I thought Wisconsin was the only state in the lower 48 that does not have poisonous snakes. Wisconsin also has the Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake. It was widely rumored that the DNR introduced some type of rattlesnake 4 or 5 miles from where I live. No way to verify that so it's just a rumor.Wisconsin has Timber Rattlers (the snakes) and a minor league baseball team named Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
What part of the world?A group of us where riding an old railroad grade, two ladies horses went a little bozo and they ended upon the ground. I dismounted to help, made sure they were OK, got them back on their horses. Stopped up the trail to regroup, be sure everyone was OK. A third lady asked if I heard the rattlesnake, Evidently it was snake that caused the problem. We were in a prime area for rattlesnakes, I've seen many in that general area, which is a state park. Long story short, I immediately got hearing aids. A few years later the area burned, a big area of shrub-steppe country along the river, after the fire all the snakes went to the small town that was the only area that didn't burn. People moved to get away from the snakes.
We were about 5 miles? south of Vantage, WA on a R/R grade east of the columbia River. I read a historical account of exploring the river a few miles further south in 1811, 'lots of flat rocks with many rattle snakes'. There is a very large apple orchard south of our location, they don't kill the rattlers, they use them to control the mice and gophers. "Pick up that bottom fruit bin with a fork lift" is the rule. There are large 'scree' slopes just east of the orchards where the snakes can den up for the winter. I've ridden in that area for quite a few years, usually during winter and spring, I've seen snakes in late March till early November. Some seem to den in the cracked basalt along the R/R grade, not much for scree slopes in that area. I think the most I've seen is 3 or 4 in one day. We're not allowed to kill them, State Park, but I do know snake shot in a .38 or ,357 will kill 'em with out a wiggle from horse back. What part of the world?
Got old 870 riot it works wonders with any thing you put in it dead snake .
I am no snake lover for sure but I think the timber is a protected animal.... I have heard stories of game Wardens showing up because of Facebook pictures..... I could be wrong but it's the reason I stopped posting pics like this... That is one dangerous snake....
Wisconsin has Timber Rattlers and Massasaugua rattlesnakes. The latter is a 'swamp' rattlesnake and is considered endangered. It is closer in relation to the pygmy rattlesnakes as the genus of both is Sistruis. Whereas the Timber is Crotalus. Because of low numbers of both in the state, they are both protected. They are rare in Vermont but I'm not sure but I thought Wisconsin was the only state in the lower 48 that does not have poisonous snakes.
