A good Rattle snake

I have killed my fair share of snakes for sure, mostly Water Moccasins. Some of the wetter areas I hunt are crawling with them and they can be agressive or want to stand their ground by laying in the middle of the trail with their mouth open showing off how white the inside of their mouth is and sticking their fangs out. I always carry a Vietnam era machete and just chop their heads off. Walking through this area where you can't see the ground during bow season takes balls but I do it anyway. I use snake chaps and have never that I know of been hit by a snake but they do instill a bit of a felling of security. I have never seen a rattler or moccasin around my house but plenty of Racers, Bull snakes, Texas rat snakes and a few copperheads. I kill every copperhead I find, my dogs and Grandkids are worth far more to me than any pretty snake. I leave the first three snakes to kill rats and mice, I have even gone out and caught rat snakes and let them go around the house and barn.

There is a woman that owns deer tracking dogs near my place outside Preston Ga. If you can't find a deer you wound, she comes for a very reasonable fee, puts her dogs on the trail and really does find them.

So what has that got to do with this snake topic? She will NOT allow her dogs to track deer from the archery season opener through October because of snakes. Seems she has both lost dogs to snakes and had some badly wounded by them. After it cools in early November, she makes her service available .

Even running tractor to put in food plots, I carry both a 22 mag NA Arms mini revolver with snake shot or the old K 22 Smith that worked here. This is relatively common in Georgia. Snake boots always.

Being a Yankee, I have never had an easy feeling when I have hunted states that have Mister No Shoulders. Surprisingly, I have never actually seen one when I have bowhunted FL, TX, AZ, LA, MO, MT, ND, SD...and they all have them. Have hunted other states during firearm or muzzleloader season with far less worries.

Spent a good amount of time on AZ and pattern tested my 45ACP with CCI snake loads. At 6 feet a bumblebee would hardly get through that 6" pattern. Am very glad that I never had to use it on a snake.

ran into this beautiful blacktail yesterday while out in the field, when they're in my yard they go to snake heaven, since I was in his, I let him go in peace
