600 yard Registered IBS matches at the Manatee

Steel away from the backstop by 25-30 yards is not safe. Too much chance for splatter and ricochet up and over the berm into the park. Some splatter might even punch through a target showing a hole in the target.

Think a splatter (shoot-n-see type) target would be visible to near all shooters using quality scopes. Only issue with anything there is you may block usage of the berm for clay bird sight-in targets.

Hear you all about the Vapor Trails. Right now psyched for both hunting season and local flat track motorcycle racing. Grouper will start hitting in both Bay and Gulf. Going to find it hard to make time and effort for target shooting in the short term.

I hear you Larry, but was just passing along the discussion. I have had very poor results relying on Shoot & See targets at 600 yards after ? 10 or 11am. Mirage is usually too bad. In the "old days" I would always use steel at the 600 or 1000 yard berm for sighters before shooting test groups on paper. So easy. I agree steel 25 yards away from the berm is at a higher risk than what we do with shooting steel now. But still looking for alternatives. A short false berm could work, but then again could cause high hit shoots to skip over. My original plan to put the target line at the base of the 625 berm keeps looking a bit better;) Have to blame Gene P for not listening to me suggesting the berm should be at 602 yards. He envisioned active pits there and needed the extra room. Steve

Active pits ...... Higher backstop needed because no way can we dig down and put pit workers under water. That would be nice to have pits but finding workers that would scuba dive with snakes and other vermin would be tough.

Larry said he had some targets from the 300 Dirty Bird shoot. We could try and then see. I don't notice the mirage anywhere near as bad here as was on the 600 and 1,000 yard ranges at the main shooting area. They might just be small enough to not block using the berm and clays for initial sighting?

I thought you would get a kick out of the active pits, but that is what the boss at the time wanted, so here we are. I also have 50+ of 6" and an assortment of larger S&S we can try. Need at least a 12x12" could be bigger? plastic boards screwed to the left or right leg of the target stand. That would be small enough to not block "crude" sighters on the berm then get better idea of hits at the 600 yards S&S. I still think they will not be readable with any mirage. Still looking for suggestions.

I think some at steel targets set 2 yards behind would work as long as they are made to be tilted forward . The distance back that it takes to stop the bullet spatter ..
the bench rest shooting is not the problem .
Move the back berm foward and double or more increase the hight Then plant eucalyptus trees on top . Larry

Now there is the smartest idea yet:) Especially like the trees on top. Waaaaay too expensive a fix needed by November 25th.

Then dont shoot in November
Make it to were we can have a range we. Can shoot at for ever .
The bench rest shooting isn't the problem .
Never has been . Larry

Planting something on top of the berm to help catch stray ricochets is food for thought. Plant or build - I like that idea after all attempts to raise the berm have been exhausted.

You can slant and lower all the gongs to no avail. A skip off the top edge or anywhere can go there. There means anywhere including the park behind the backstop. Gongs are dangerous unless there is a perpendicular backstop right behind them and to the sides.

We have enough dirt to make the berms 150' high . I don't see that in the plans .
But you and I know it it's not the bench rest shooting that's the problem.
If that isn't fixed We have a problem.
Distance and hight helps .
If you will check on eucalyptus trees
They grow tall and fast If we would plant them on the property We could have a income of $10,000 per acre Just food for a thought . Larry

Reminder that the 10/28th match this Saturday is the last practice match before we start sanctioned matches in Nov.

Thanks,

Steve

Sure will CaptainMal. Starting in November, they will be up on the IBS site as well. Will keep bumping this thread also the weeks before the November match to keep it current. See ya Sat. Looks like a bigger turn-out already for this Saturday. Steve

I’m ready. It’ll be more of a testing round for me and to get my feet wet competing. E
Hi Earl,

That looks like a great start. Are you coming out to shoot the last club match on Saturday? If LG only, 30 rounds in a typical minimum. I also use most all of these matches to test 4 different loads. 5 each for the 4 record targets. Best way to test under match conditions. Please let me know if you want me to put you on my shooters email list. Steve

Yes, I’ll be there Saturday. I figured 3 five shot strings plus sighters , plus I will bring 15 from another load to test with providing. We could possibly test some after the match . Please put me on the mailing list.E

Earl, This Saturday match is the IBS 600 yard "club" shoot. That is 4, 5 shot groups for record at 600 yards, with LG and HG not the steel shoot 3, 5 shot strings. The next steel shoot, which is the best way to get started, is on Nov. 18th. That match is much less formal and you usually will get a chance to shoot some practice after, but just on steel.

PM me your email address, and I will add you to my shooters list. Our web site maybe back up corrected, so look there also for dates and match details.

It looks like the back BR 600 yard range may be opened to qualified shooters to do load testing only at 600 yards, but it may be several weeks maybe more for them to get a better road down to the berms to set paper targets. Maybe just Thursday & Friday?
