Steel away from the backstop by 25-30 yards is not safe. Too much chance for splatter and ricochet up and over the berm into the park. Some splatter might even punch through a target showing a hole in the target.
Think a splatter (shoot-n-see type) target would be visible to near all shooters using quality scopes. Only issue with anything there is you may block usage of the berm for clay bird sight-in targets.
Hear you all about the Vapor Trails. Right now psyched for both hunting season and local flat track motorcycle racing. Grouper will start hitting in both Bay and Gulf. Going to find it hard to make time and effort for target shooting in the short term.
I hear you Larry, but was just passing along the discussion. I have had very poor results relying on Shoot & See targets at 600 yards after ? 10 or 11am. Mirage is usually too bad. In the "old days" I would always use steel at the 600 or 1000 yard berm for sighters before shooting test groups on paper. So easy. I agree steel 25 yards away from the berm is at a higher risk than what we do with shooting steel now. But still looking for alternatives. A short false berm could work, but then again could cause high hit shoots to skip over. My original plan to put the target line at the base of the 625 berm keeps looking a bit better
