6.5 Grendel Bolt Gun

That's very true. When I was working actively with mine it always seemed starved for a few more grains of powder. Always a little out of reach. Do yourself a favor and get the Lapua or Alexander Arms (rebranded Lapua) brass. I started off with Hornady and the primer pockets got loose after a few reloading cycles. IIRC, Alexander Arms has a sale every year on their brass around Christmas. Ball powders at the time, produced the best velocities, but I'm not into ball powders. A few powders regularly enjoyed these days, were not out yet, so I'm sure the bar has lifted.

Hoot
I've been working with four powders , stick and ball, two bullets and seating depths. Out of frustration I grabbed the bottle of Varget set aside until next spring.....Bingo with the 123 Hornady's in my Predator.

Did you chrono that load? I'm using AA Barnes factory ammo now, but will hand load once i shoot through it. I've heard that Varget is really slow in the Grendel.

I was planning on using my Chronograph but I forgot to turn it off the last time I used it,,,,,dead battery. So no I didn't get the speed but loaded to about the middle of the case shoulder wall. My load is over suggested maximum, and did not exhibit any excessive pressure signs in my bolt gun.

6.5 Grendel
I load it for my contender
140 gr SPBT+ 19 gr IMR 4198= 2200 fps 17" Bbl
Deer Getter
Season starts in nine hours

Got my Ruger American Ranch (16" bbl) in 6.5GR last month. Shot sub MOA all day in the factory plastic stock with factory 129SST. Optical chrono gave me 2350 or so with not so great SDs.

Tried out an MDT LSS-XL with a Magnetospeed stock attachment over the weekend with some handloads (123 ELDM with BLC2). Loads ranged from 2200 - 2350...ALL SINGLE DIGIT SDs (lowest being 4.7) and all sub 3/4 minute groups. Extremely satisfied with the cartridge and action choice.

I built a 243 LBC Turbo 40 (aka: 6mm AR Turbo 40) on a Rem 722 short action with a custom PTG one piece bolt using a PPC bolt face and mini 16 extractor. Round is a wildcat off of the 6.5 Grendel case. Worked fine as a repeater, but I’ve recently epoxy welded a single shot follower into the action because it is intended to be a target/bench varmint rifle

I put together a Howa Mini a couple years ago when Brownell's had the 6.5G HB barreled actions on sale. Dropped it into a Boyds thumbhole stock, bobbed the mag and put a 6.5x20 scope on it, it shoots little groups with Nosler 100gr Custom Comps.

I use it for coyotes but when I take it on the bike i put it back in a shortened factory stock(heavy winter clothes) and have added the Dipp bottom metal and switched the scope to a 1.6-6x42mm Meopta.

I also built a 20 PPC with a Howa Mini that that was purchased with a 6.5 Grendel barrel. aftermarket parts for the Mini are starting to take off because they are such great little actions. I like them a lot better than the CZ. Nice having more aftermarket options on the Mini. CZ doesn’t really have anything.

I’ve installed the DIP aluminum bottom metal, DIP aluminum magazine base plate, custom trigger spring kit, picatinny rail, Boyd’s stock, custom barrel, and fully bedded the rifle. They also make aftermarket aluminum 700 style floor plates for the Mini if you wanna go that route.

Built this one for a deer or hog stalking rifle. Cheap Lee dies, 3x9 old Red field, AR Comp and Barnes 100 TTSX it has shot 1 1/4 at 300 yards. Go figure.

I have a CZ527, in 6.5 Grendel. It shot terrible at first, due to being loose in the stock, and the rear steel pillar being loose. I bedded the action from the front of the mag to the end of the chamber and bedded the pillar also. It shoots factory federal 120s into 3/4 or less for 3 shot groups. With 85 grain Sierras it shot 5 into a very small hole, and 120 Sp Sierras into just under 1/2", using H4895 with both bullets. I did no further load development as this was good enough for a truck gun or a youngster hunting.

My 6.5 Grendel is not a bolt gun. It is a TC Encore with a barrel from MGM. At 22" I can run my Dead Air Sandman TI suppressor on it and the overall length is only a couple inches longer than my 22" barrelled bolt guns.
My go-to hunting load is a pretty conservative load of 8208XBR (28.2 grains) under a 105 grain Cavity Back MKZ bullet. I am getting right at 2590 fps out of that load. So far it has accounted for 3 whitetail does, 2 big Axis bucks, 2 Axis does, and 3 GA hogs. Super performance from that cartridge and bullet combo.
If I was forced to pick only one of my guns to hunt deer and hogs with for the rest of my life, it would be that gun.

I have a Howa mini that has quickly become one of my favorite go with me everywhere rifles. I have it loaded with 85gr Sierras for coyotes this winter and it is a consistent half moa or better shooter. I can't wait until it finally cools off around here and I can try it out with my new suppressor.

I had a Grendel built on a Sako A2 6 ppc action, 1:8" Lilja barrel. Fed it 123gr Amax over CFE223 in Lapua cases. Shot really well. Surprisingly effective on deer. Ended up selling it as the aim for my build was having a lightweight rifle and this one weighed the same as all my rifles.

If I were to build again I'd make sure it was light enough, possibly also a 6mm.

Made a few films with it.

Curious about the 20PPC. I hear various input. Any gains over the 204 or 20P?

I saw there was not much love for the 22Nosler. I ran across some factory ammo, priced cheaper than brass. A pencil barrel Mini in 223 that was a problem child. Ordered a prefit from Preferred Barrels with their nut in 22 Nosler. Their twist rates offered went from a 1-12 to a 1-8, I went with the 1-8 and now wish I had went with the1-12. I have exceeded RPM’s on a couple and the don’t make it to 100. Still trying to sort out what bullets I can use.

FYI this is in an Oryx chassis. Used the factory 65Grendel magazine with the 22 Nosler. Work fine and feed all of them.

Accuracy with the factory ammo is excellent.
Once again CFE223 has provided higher than listed speeds.
