6.5 Grendel

Stock arrived from Stockys. Needed some barrel inletting due to contact at the fore end where the barrel extends. I think the Stockys are cut for the Sporter barrel. Not sure why they ask which barrel profile your ordering for when they need inletting regardless. Stock weighed 20oz as advertised. Complete rifle with scope comes in at exactly 7lbs loaded with 6 rounds. Very light.
Which stock profile is that one? Also, how long did it take for stocky's to get it to you?

Stock profile meaning barrel channel ? Design wise it's the vertical grip stock that looks much like the Iota Eko or Kremlin but the fore end is slimmed down to almost a Sporter size to keep weight down. Doesn't have the flat fore arm even tho I have the heavier barrel. Scale weight is 17.9oz. Claimed 20oz was the stock weight from the factory.

Look excellent!

I mean which stock is it on the stocky's site. Maybe the VG hunter?

Did you have to backorder it? If so, how long did it take to ship?

They said 6 weeks but it was only about 2 weeks.

So I'm curious. All I see are 6.5 Grendel loads being in the 2.260-2.290 OAL range. I measured my chamber (factory saami) and the OAL is 2.400 in the lands. How far, not sure exactly. The max load according to several using IMR8208 seems to be 28.5 and spikes rapidly to that point. My questions is, has anyone tried a longer OAL while using that 28.5 to see if pressure is there ? I'm not much of a gambler and nobody should be when it comes to this subject. I'm only asking because pressure spikes from compressed loads and/or bullets jammed into rifling. Allowing extra space for powder helps and keeping the bullet out of the lands does also. Loaded at 2.262, I'm compressed at 28.5. Loaded at 2.325, it's not compressed. Has anyone played with these seat depths to see changes in this problem ?

I run mine longer but my rifles are AR's. I cheat and use PRI 6.8 magazines that I cut the front out of. My max OAL is whatever the magwell allows, call it 2.3+". I also use and love XBR for the lighter weights (105-108) and I'm a grain above your mentioned powder charge.

No, I haven't seen any evidence of extreme pressure/spikes as my cases (AA/Lapua) have lasted up to ten loads and more, accuracy is great, velocities are decent but not screaming (call it 2690 fps average in a 20" Proof), and XBR isn't compressed with my charge weight. I'd have to check, but the Proof doesn't have a long throat and I seem to remember (without looking at my notes) a 107 SMK would be no more than 2.300".

I have a new Rainier Ultra Match (Criterion chambered by Craddock) 16" that has a throat that seems to be half the length of the barrel. Who knows, I may try to breech seat some bullets over a case full of powder and see what I get velocity wise (I'm joking of course).

One grain over the 28.5 with 105-107s ? Looks like 29.5 is the max charge I can go to (case fill wise) and not be compressed at 2.375. That's with a 123 grain bullet.

As mentioned, I use XBR with the lighter weight bullets in the Grendel. I probably have tried XBR with 123's but that had to have been way back and I doubt I was using enough to be compressed. The amount I mentioned was for a 107 SMK or 108 Scenar.

With the 120-123 grain bullets I use LeverRevolution or 2520. That is just what I do as I like velocity and accuracy for a given weight bullet.

With a case more or less full of LeverRevolution and a 105-108 I could probably get more velocity than using XBR but XBR is just so accurate with the 105-108 bullets for me.

LeverEvolution seems extinct around here

I use Bergers for target work and varmints. I use 100gr. and 120gr. Barnes and 100gr and 120gr. Nosler Partition for Deer.

Any idea where Howa mini action magazine springs can be purchased for the 6.5 Grendel mini magazines ? I can't seem to locate them anywhere

After posting the reply above, I went out to the shop & grabbed one of the Jefferson Outdoors DBMs for use with CZ527 mags, then dug out the spare CZ mag I'd bought after reading about this DBM. Swapped out the DIP DBM for the new Jefferson CZ bottom metal in the Mini chambered for 22 Grinch, and after removing the striker assembly from the Mini's bolt, ran a trial with 5rds of Grinch FF ammo loaded with Hornady 75 AMax bullets - they fed out of that 527 mag perfectly, much smoother than when running them out of the Howa poly mags in the DIP DBM. Great! - now all I have to do is find a few more of the 527 mags, and I'm all set. Not only does the 527 mag solve the feeding issue I was having, but it slips into the Jefferson DBM and latches just as easily & slick as it feeds rounds! Hokie-Pokie Kid, you rock!
So your using the cz 527 mags in the JO Howa mini bottom metal ? No other modifications ?

Nope - Jefferson Outdoors also makes a specific DBM for use only with CZ527 mags. It's anodized aluminum, fits flush with the bottom of the B&C stocks, and accepts the steel 5-rd CZ527 magazines.

I think what he is trying to say that there is a lot of loading data in these books for the 6.5 Grendel. The data is for AR’s but can generally be used in a bolt action but you can go higher in a bolt gun on pressure but also hence the disclaimer “start low and work up”. But, then again, I’m not speaking for anyone but myself….
You can find data for the Grendel online for Nosler Bullets too. Do a search for Nosler Reloading Data and they will give you powder options and starting points
Alexander Arms has really good data on there web site. E
