45 caliber smokeless muzzleloader

In Colorado,
Our primitive season or muzzle loader season- open sights, granulated black powder or substitute (no pellets or smokeless), open (exposed) ignition system, full caliber round balls or slugs (no sabots). It really is a primitive weapon season designed for 100 yard shooting…….. but it is during the rut.

These rifles like the one you built for Tom could be used during the other rifle seasons without issue.

My son hunts during a short range rifle season in ID, I wonder if this bad boy could be used for that hunt?

Muzzleloader elk in Colorado has to be .50 caliber or larger because we all know those little .45's and .40's just can't possibly kill an elk.

Whatever.

Hey man. This probably isn't the forum to go around quoting 1/2 Minute front stuffers at 1/4 mile unless it's a thing.

1) We wanna see it, because that shit is cool and a bunch of us have had and built them before also.

2) If it does NOT exist, then we're gonna probably be interested in the statement as well.

This and other pics were posted by others…looks like I’m not the only one with that kind of results. I’ve done over a dozen and they all seem to shoot 1/2 MOA…at this point I expect it.

Thank you!

You fellas shooting plane Jane plastic sabots out of these things, or is it some space age ceramic asbestos?

SIzed land riders, no sabots. There are a couple other manufacturers of these but the Pittmans seem to be the most used.

I was big into smokeless muzzleloading for awhile but have been out of it for years. What is the priming situation with this? That was always the weak point of these designs. Are vent liners still a thing?

So do they use conventional rifling? If the bullet is riding the lands, what provides the gas seal?

Yes, conventional rifling. Bullets come slightly oversized and you size them in an inline sizing die to fit your bore. They will obturate under pressure to fill the lands. You try to not use a wad but sometimes you get better results when you use one.

That's pretty insane to think they can be that accurate when they're relying on pressure deformation to seal the bullet to the bore.
Think about the bullet alignment of the bore rider ML setup over stuffing a traditional rifle bullet into a smooth cylinder then smashing it into a tapered cone then swaging it down into the lands and grooves. The bore rider is sitting there perfectly aligned in the bore just waiting for a little thump in the butt to shove it down the bore.

BTW you can get that 300gn flying 3100+ fps with a fist full of powder :)

While that bore rider is awesome, my personal hunting muzzy is a custom barreled 50 caliber using a duplex smokeless load of AA 5744 as the priming charge with H322 as the main charge. I find it more convenient and I still get 25-2600 fps with a crushrib sabot and 250gr Hornady Monoflex. It’s not quite as accurate but has killed every deer out to just over 300 yards..10-15 at this point I imagine. I’d say that one is a solid 1-1 1/2 MOA rifle although i basically just sighted it in and hunted it.
