300 Norma Improved 35 degree

usually like about the same jump with the same reamer in each caliber.
What jump has been working with the Berger 230g hybrids?

Im starting this thread for load data for those that are using my reamer design. There are a lot of different 300 Norma improved designs out there, do not assume the load data is interchangeable because there are slight case capacity differences.

I am finally getting back around to tuning my light weight, with Br season finally starting and the 2k match coming its been on the back burner.

On these light contour barrels I start by shooting a normal ladder. I call it a pressure ladder because all Im really doing is getting an idea of a max and whether the powder/bullet/primer combo looks like it will shoot in this barrel. I am not looking at these to tune, but, should I continue with this combo and if so, it gives me an idea of where to start.

I started this one on 215 Bergers, H1000, and cci250s. Neck tension was light at only .001"

This is a 600yd pressure ladder shot from a 10lb rifle with optics and bipod.View attachment 1182536

This is in a 25" Krieger. I stopped at 88.5 because the first node looked so good. It was coming back into the next one but it was going to end up hotter than I want. I didnt hit pressure, but I know it was not far off. By the way the velocity climbed smoothly, and the way the ladder formed, this combo has good potential to be consistently accurate. The 5 shot cluster was 1.2". I will run N570 next.

I also have data on the 230 Berger. This was in a 28" Krieger. A little heavier platform, more like 13lb with optics and bipod. I played with this one last year. This 600 yd pressure ladder did hold up. It is the ideal shaped ladder though. That 85 grain load was extremely accurate up until I pull off the barrel. I think the 230 is probably the ideal bullet in this case, but there is a little jump in recoil.

Running 230 Atips behind what I settled on 91.0 gr retumbó. At 3.752 coal. 3173 out of a 34" Bob Jury barrel. Holding 0.3 moa of vertical and 0.5 was my horizontal
SD st 4 1 es of 8.0 even. I had heard alot of bad reports on the 230 atip but they seem to be working ok

I am wondering about case capacity for your version and when you are posting what your cases are sitting at in this regard. I'm using Peterson brass and my water capacity test is ranging between 110.8 to 111.4 gr. After 2 firings just neck sizing. Just trying to get a handle the improved capacity as I saw before is usually closer to 108

That’s impressive! Close to the charge weight where N570 shoots really good with the 220 and 230 as well

Has anyone ever really tested N570 vs. something like H1000, etc in the NMI to document barrel / throat wear?

I compete in ELR and am switching to the 300 NMI and would like to test N570, but have heard horror stories about it with the 300 NMI, 33 XC, etc.

If we are talking about 50 or so less rounds of barrel life in a cartridge that is at peak-ish accuracy for 800 or so rounds I can live with that. If it is 300 rounds less, that would be a problem.

Keep in mind we shoot 10 rounds in 5-6 minutes in ELR.

Fire cracking in throat at 100 rounds using N570 in my 300NMI. I would stay away from N570. You can use N570 like i did and barrel will be done at 600 rounds. My load was 93gr of N570 with 245LR.

4 to 5 rounds at the time than i cool barrel off but still, fire cracking was too much. Great performance with N570 but don’t expect much more than 600 rounds. My barrel was Mod BB from Bartlein.

Im using Micro die from bullet central and i have same issue using Lapua brass. Brass growing by alot, but i have to bump my shoulder .005 to fit freely in my chamber. I’m getting Warner tool company custom FL die. Will keep you posted if anything changes.

I wouldnt stay away from any powder. You shoot the most accurate one. N570 is that one most of they time. Youll get 800 if you keep it cool. If your getting it hot I dont care what powder you use you will shoot it out much faster. I mean half maybe less.

I won’t argue with Alex i got nothing but respect for him. N570 is amazing performance and accuracy but when it comes to fire cracking that was my experience.

Ya, I would not argue with Alex either. I am going to get another barrel and dedicate it to N570 and see how it does.

Alex does make a good point in that, if this is a competition rifle you shoot what shoots best. When I drag raced I did not whine about the cost of faster parts- I just used them.

I finally got around to testing more in my 300 norma improved 245 berger 30 inch barrel 1-8 twist. I tested n568 84 85 86 87 88 grains. I shot a few 3 shot groups accuracy was decent but es and sd was horrible. Nothing to write home at going to retest 86 87 88. 88 grain is was 2967 so nothing crazy. Going to use different brass next time.

I worked up n565 80 81 82 83 84 grains. 82 is pretty much max with 2927. Ran it up to 2978 but to hot for my liking. 79.5 80 and 81 shoot good. 79.5 sd 3 es 8 and 1 hole on 3 shots 2850. 80 grains was 2868 and 81 was 2888. Very consistent but slow with n565.

I actually went all the way to 90 grains with n568 and was 3007 avg and no pressure. I'm actually going to be retesting once I switch barrels. My old barrel is getting close to being shot out I think.

I agree, I think getting a gt to feed might be an issue. You would definitely have to use a dbm. So you going to be trying to feed from a 30-06 mag. Never tried it so I dont know. On the subject of a trainer rifle, what are you trying to get out of it? You wont be able to compare ballistics so all your going to get is trigger time. To be honest I think you would get more out of shooting your 300nmi less than shooting the gt more. You need the real recoil and real ballistics to get better with it in my opinion. Just for trigger time and keeping up your fundamentals, a rimfire is hard to beat. They expose more of your mistakes than a centerfire because the bullet is in the barrel for so long.

You are far right , actually I m on a Cadex multi caliber platform and I can go from any 6 mm up to a Lapua bolt face but don t really know how a GT will feed really , moving to USA end of the year to Florida and trying to decide what to get, not many LR firing range down in Miami , should make me visit more frequently some friends in Georgia and go long over there, thank you

I’ve got problems… I had Alex spin me up one awhile back. Finally got around to playing with it. I FF with 83 h1000 and 230 bergers. Everything went well. Shot stupid good. Then went and found what I thought was a solid ish load on once fired brass. Actually finished yesterday. 84.4 gr h1000 and 230 bergers around 2880-3000. This was on once fired brass and finished at 99 rounds on the barrel. Went today to verify on now twice fired brass and everything fell apart. I felt it formed well after the 2 firings so bumped back around .003 from the formed brass measurement I just took on 3 firings. I sized last night off the Alex wheeler method. I was getting heavy bolt lift and clickers. I kept backing the charge down and quit at 81 grains still slight clicker. That’s way low in my eyes for a nmi. And shoot, 2 grains less then I FF with. I’ve been on top of cleaning it after every outing. So I don’t think it’s a carbon problem. And it went from shooting good on the last piece of brass yesterday to issues out of the gate. This is all resized brass I did last night but I didn’t do anything outa the norm. I’ve really simplified my process. I clean with a rag and alcohol. Deprime, size, chamfer/debur/trim, prime, charge, seat. I bumped the shoulders about .003 avg, .002 nt. And that’s about it. I haven’t trimmed yet but the brass hasn’t grown. I even went and opened another jug of h1k as I thought maybe I emptied a different powder in the one last night when I was cleaning up. Not the case. I’m at a loss and pretty frustrated. What am I missing? Could it be a sizing die problem? I’ve heard of guys having issues there. I have a bullet central sizer. I know it’s not a smith problem. Alex does phenomenal work. This was really the first sign of pressure. Although I did run it up to 76 gr yesterday and experience a slight clicker there? Now should you have bolt click? No ejector mark no heavy bolt lift and 76 shouldn’t be ungodly high. I was hoping to have this running for elk season but maybe not now
