222 remingon

rifle is done the Hart (NY) barrel was cut to 25.5 inches ( a last second change from the planed 22 in.) I am now working up loads and so far a custom 52 grain bullet has been the best so far followed closely by a SMK 53 flat base. The best powder so far has been H322/22.0 gr. The bullet was crammed .015 and results have been groups in the low ones and twos. will try H335 have tried imr 4198, 8208xbr, H4898 Gary
THAT H=322 AND 22.GRS IS ALL YOU'LL EVER NEED WITH 52 GR BULLETS THAT THE SAME LOAD AS MY 40X IT SHOOTS TINY TINY BUGHOLES !!!!

I have/had two Brothers 10 and 11 years older, and we all learned to shot woodchucks with an old Savage 340 Deuce. My elder Brother passed a couple of years back and the 340 came home to stay at my house.

Cosmetically, it's a mess (there was a flash fire in its history), but all parts are intact and the bore is till shiny. This will be a project rifle.

Said elder Brother gave me the load, 53gr SMK, 24.5gr BLC-2, Fed Match Primer, in a Rem case. Will have to find my own seating depth.

Looking forward to a labor of love.

Greg

PS, My elder Brother, Bill Langelius, died on a back swing at his favorite golf course just outside Phoenix AZ.

Totally unrelated, my Wife and I just arrived at our new address in Pearce, AZ, this past Memorial Weekend. Stranger things have been known to happen, but this one's strange enough to last me for a while.

You made the jump. Good for you. Enjoy the lack of humidity and snow...and oh ya, lackof taxes, Cuomo, and that idiot Schumer.

You guy`s are killin me...;)

I`ve always wanted a .222, I just might have to buy a barrel and a reamer now.......

1-14 .250 neck and 4198I you will not be sorry
A deuce is addictive today 19.5 4198I in 92 deg swirling wind
You will not be sorry!
I have a 1960 vintage 222 cal 700 rem. that needs a barrel change do I stay with a 1-14 twist or would a 1-12 twist work better with 52/53 grain bench rest bullets, this will be a 100 yard paper puncher only in local bench rest.but its main purpose is group size only. The barrel will be heavy and 24 inches thanks Gary

Little different combination for 222 rem friend re-barreled his 40x using a 1/8 twist and uses 80.5 gr Bergers with Varget shoots groups in 1s and really out shines the 52 gr at 200 yards & 300 y.
I noticed Berger has revised twist for the 80.5 at 1/7 twist

Wow, 80.5gr from a 222. I wonder what kind of velocity?

Guessing around 22 Hornet velocities using that heavy a bullet. Don't think I'd want to use that heavy a bullet varmint hunting in partially settled areas in the 222 unless I could depend on bullet blow up on missed shots.

Yes I fill the case through a 10in drop tube to get it all in , have some crunching as seating the bullet but , NO PRESSURE SIGNS AT ALL
Oh it's a 24in barrel

If group size is the number one goal, 22" is as long as I would go!

My 22" in my Panda 10.5lb LV, will shoot .1's when I do my part with 47 grain bullets at 3540 fps, 52 will group as good when I do my part and give me 3470 fps.

I can't recall seeing a top short range benchrest shooter using a barrel in any caliber longer than 22-22.5", most 20 to 21.5".

This partly to make wieght, but many use a wieght system in the stock to make wieght and keep the barrel shorter, in the sweet spot!

The cartridges they use with the faster powders needed to get full case load density, seem to prefer this length, and going longer gives no apreciable or relevant added velocity. Besides, absolute accuracy and bench manners trump anything a longer barrel could offer.

52/53gr hollow point match bullets are made for a 14-twist. If it’s only going to be a 100yd paper puncher, I would leave it 14. If you wanted to shoot tipped bullets at PD’s beyond 100yds, I would bump it to 12”.

I would have to try the 1-12 twist, example the 53gr VMAX bullet inexpensive and extremely accurate, in my 223 1-12 twist, I have tried them in Fireball and several 222's with the 1-14 none of them stabilize that bullet, due to the length.
That bullet actually needs even more than a 12 twist to be fully stable and take advantage of its high BC. Thats a very good bullet for stretching out a .224 cal at high velocity, but yeah, it’s really long. They shoot great out to 200-300 yards even in a 12” twist.
