222 remingon

H322 and Hornady/Sierras in 52 or 53 grains is my combination for paper shooting in a factory 700 Varmint Special. For fur or feathers, the Hornady 50gr SX shoots almost as well.

rifle is done the Hart (NY) barrel was cut to 25.5 inches ( a last second change from the planed 22 in.) I am now working up loads and so far a custom 52 grain bullet has been the best so far followed closely by a SMK 53 flat base. The best powder so far has been H322/22.0 gr. The bullet was crammed .015 and results have been groups in the low ones and twos. will try H335 have tried imr 4198, 8208xbr, H4898 Gary

What about a 1 in 13 twist? Has it been tried? Barlow

I've got a bartlein being chambered as we speak for a 222 in 13 tw..It was all I could really find at the time when I was barrel hunting for a 14 tw. Im hoping it will be close enough to the 14tw in terms if velocity and should be easily able to handle the 52-53 gn bullets.

My .222 M 40 XBR shot SMK 52 grain HPBTails into a tiny hole with 27.3 grains of H 335 and a Rem 7.5, it was a 14 twist factor heavy SS barell.

holy cow I just loaded my highest H335 load so far at 22.2 in but--- I have no sighs of high pressure at 22.0--Gary

my mistake my H322 load is 22.2 was 22.0 and my H 335 load is now 24,3 was 24.o the rifle shoots better as the loads go up--Gary

VV N133 has shot very well in the last two .222's I have messed with. Makes 'em go too. 3300+ is not a problem with 52 grain Bergers or Barts.

up date I had a chance to do more testing with a different powder - all 3 shot groups, best was a .129 using Berger 52 match and 23.4 grns of Benchmark. second best was .160 using 53 smk flat base and 20.5 grns of imr 4198, third best was .204 with the 23.4 grns of Benchmark and smk 53 fb, fourth best .294 with Berger 52 and 22.2 grns of H322 wind was gusting to 3 miles an hour all groups at 107 yards

Shot my new 13 tw 24" Bartlein barreled 722 about a month ago, got lucky as there were long periods of no wind. The gun shot everything really well at 100 yds, even the bad loads were under moa. At 200 yds they were still under an inch. The Sierra 50 bk's and 53gn Vmax were my two bullet choices. Seating depth didn't seem to really matter much either as there wasn't enough noticeable difference between them. The load I'm going with is a fed 205m, 20.4 of H4198 and a 53gn Vmax at 3225 fps. Its a tiny tiny bit less accurate as a whole compared to the Sierras but the bullet ballistically (energy), is the best I can come up with so far. It was grouping in the 3s with boring consistency. I can push this load faster with minimal pressure signs on the Hornady brass too, even though I have lapua on the way which I know is going to be even more accurate and durable. The only load left to test is the berger 52s in front of some H322. All in all its a great shooting gun.

You guy`s are killin me...;)

I`ve always wanted a .222, I just might have to buy a barrel and a reamer now.......

Phil.

I had Hart Rifle Barrels re-barrel my vintage 722 222 with a one in 14 twist (came out a bit slower as I measure things) and am very happy with it. It performs well with target bullets, the old 50 Blitz soft point and the 40 V-Max. Not so well with Nosler ballistic tip 50s. I shot my first "zero group" with this barrel using Starke 52 Red Prairie bullets. I'd go with 14" were I to do it again. I had the chamber cut with a SAAMI reamer. Nothing fancy. No neck turning.

1-14 twist, 52g bullet and 21g of IMR 4198.

It's kinda been the "it just works" standard for 50+ years with the deuce, really no need to look else where.

I get 3300fps with that combo above in a Sako factory sporter that shoots .1s and .2s, holds 6 in the internal magazine and can't be beat for a walking varmint gun around the farms.

When you drive I-90 across New York, look south when you reach mile marker 222, and there's the Remington plant!

Doesn't take much to entertain me.

I have taken 40x 222 pd shooting on occasion using Sierra 50 blitz (flat base) and 4198 - dogs did not know the difference

I also took the same rifle with some 55gr blitz flat base (wanted to use them up) and in the 14 twist, again the pd did not know the diff.

if you are in comp, the 14 twist and 52/53 gr Sierra are perfect.

Bob

I have 3-222 Rem / 14 twist rifles and they all group nice and tight with my own 46 / 50 / 52 gr FB's.
With 21.5 grs. of 4198 and my 46 gr FB bullet averages 3300 + fps from my 24" barrel.
