222 remingon

I have a 1960 vintage 222 cal 700 rem. that needs a barrel change do I stay with a 1-14 twist or would a 1-12 twist work better with 52/53 grain bench rest bullets, this will be a 100 yard paper puncher only in local bench rest.but its main purpose is group size only. The barrel will be heavy and 24 inches thanks Gary

No reason not to go with the 12 twist, that`a what i`d do if it was mine.

I have 3 Triple Duces all with 14 twist barrels and all are tack drivers. If you want to shoot bullets heavier than 55gr then maybe a 12 twist. The Duce was designed aroundon a 14 twist barrel. Most BR records with the Duce were with 14 twist barrels.

shot br for years starting in the late 60's, with 222 and 222m, I can tell you the 12 twist in a no-no, the case is not big enough to use pills above 55gr and is designed to use 50-53's. the 14 twist is what Mike Walker, designed it to use and had the custom shop (40x's then) install - even the 222m was balanced with the 14 twist.

Working on a custom rifle in .222 myself.
I also chuse 1-14/22' bbl barrel.

Did allot of homework about it.

Friendly greetings Johan

My next questions would be what reamer or freebore, straight 222, AI or mag. then to turn necks with Lapaua brass or not ?

;D

the 222ai does not give you much to work with. in the 70's a lot of br shooters used a 222m case with a 222 neck/shoulder on it called the 222 1/2. Ted Boughton of Rochester came up with the idea and a number of shooters used it.

very accurate stay the AI is not to your advantage as the cases have little taper in them to gain from.

I just chambered mine in 222m for pd's kept the rem bbl and it shoots in the .25-.3 so far.

Good response guys I think it will be a 1/14 twist I have a no turn 6br with a .272 chamber and it shoot very good. So I was thinking not to turn lapua brass with the 222. I am researching barrel manufacturers and barrel contours now. thanks for the replies chime in about the barrels all info is good--Gary

I have had great results with the Hart bbl and I use R. w. Hart, Bobby Hart of Nescopeck for all my smith work
800) 368-3656 - this 1/2 of the Hart rifle bbl family that started the business.

Clyde and Robert Hart, who have both passed - now their sons families run the two branches of the business, Jerry (Clyde son) side makes the bbls and does good Smith work, Wally/Bobby are Roberts side of the family

originally Roberts side deep drilled the blanks and prepared them for rifling - sent them to Clyde to rifle and turn.

Hart Rifle Bbls, LaFayett, NY makes the bbls now, and does good smith work - Clyde's side of the family
R W. Hart, Nescopeck, Pa is Robert's side of the family and they do great smith work get the bbls from cousins.

A .252 chamber neck for a no-turn using Lapua brass and zero freebore. A 1 in 14" twist unless you plan to shoot the 53 gr. V-Max, then 1 in 12".

So here I am as of now I have ordered a. 224 heavy varmint barrel from Hart(NY) MY smith and I have checked on a reamer(.252) neck,.040 free bore. it will be cut to 22/ 24 inch . Ive been told that I should look for 3150 fps. with a 52/53 grain bullet My new Lapua brass neck outside dim looks to be .248 I installed a Match bullet into 1 case as a dummy round and it measured .2507 dia. will this be to tight in a .252 chamber . I wasn't going to turn the necks but it looks like I might have to---Gary

the 222 is a great round,

if you are thinking of using it for varmint, pd, consider the 222m as it is equally accurate and had the advantage of speed.

I am pushing 50 sierra bk 3500+ and getting .3 groups from a factory bbl 12x 24"

The .040 jump can be accommodated with seating depth. As for your neck clearance issue, the usual clearance in the 222s heyday was .0015 but if I recall cleanliness was mandatory. There were a lot of high end smiths in those days who built good rifles with neck diameters of .253 and .252 which were considered no turn necks.

Good luck.

I would have to try the 1-12 twist, example the 53gr VMAX bullet inexpensive and extremely accurate, in my 223 1-12 twist, I have tried them in Fireball and several 222's with the 1-14 none of them stabilize that bullet, due to the length.

i built a 223ai in 1-12 to specifically shoot the 53gr vmax....but sold it before i could really even shoot it. So i have two CZ527's in 222....was thinking about rebarreling one with a heavy contour 3 groove Pac-Nor at 1:12 (24") for the 53's......and keep the other as is

I have taken 40x 222 pd shooting on occasion using Sierra 50 blitz (flat base) and 4198 - dogs did not know the difference

I also took the same rifle with some 55gr blitz flat base (wanted to use them up) and in the 14 twist, again the pd did not know the diff.

if you are in comp, the 14 twist and 52/53 gr Sierra are perfect.
