PD & Rockchuck Shooter's

Even a 220 Swift can get thousands of rounds through the barrel before it opens up much. I learned this decades ago shooting sage rats, if you can't leave your hand on the barrel, it's simply too hot. Solved this by adding a 22-250 and a 10-22 to the mix and later on other rifles. One gets warm, simply swap in another or better yet have a cup of coffee with the guys. If everyone is shooting highpower seems breaks are about the same time and many of us know hunting and varminting are as much about socializing as anything.

Of course it helped that we usually went in March or early April when the mornings were cold, or even spitting snow. We did late May exactly once, 80+ deg and all the alfalfa was up more than 8" so it simply wasn't productive. Not only few targets, but barrels heating quickly and sunburn was a serious issue. lol

I once had a Ruger 1 B in 223 . Very nice eye appealing rifle . I would not spend any money on one. A bolt gun will deliver better accuracy and performance.
Humm, my opinion and limited experience differs, as my No.1V 223 was sold to me by a neighbor because "it won't shoot". After lapping the barrel, floating the forearm, adding a Canjar single set trigger, and adding a quality scope, it now shoots right at .25" @ 100 yds with it's preferred handload.

It is the only rifle I've ever owned, bolt gun or otherwise, that I've ever been able to go 100 for 100 on sage rats here a few years ago. Never been able to duplicate the feat, and I've of course tried.

I primarily field bolt guns for sage rats and rockchucks, but this No.1 has a dear spot for me, and is still launching the rats in grand style.

12T, right? What weight bullets Rick?

For either pd's or chucks at distance, the 22-250AI - 50BT@4225- over the years has been used more than anything else. For pure nastiness on chucks the .257WBY - 100gr. Sierras @ 4000 - is just fun.
A couple years ago I built both a 22Creed to shoot 75 elds and a 22-250ai to shoot 53 vmax's. I thought the creed @3500 was going to be king, but out to 500, the 53's @4000 are just fantastic.
I did switch to the 62 VT's @3700 in the Creed, and I think that is a better combination than the 75's, and probably on par with the 53's, but better at 600-700+.
Speed is king.

May I ask... what powder did you run under these 62 ELDVT in 22 CM?
RE-26 is now a supply problem for me very soon, so I will be back in the search for a replacement.

I didn't see it mentioned, but one of the requirements for a great varmint rifle should be remaining on target through the shot.

Another factor is how many shots before your barrel is hot.

My Rem 40x 22-250 is a sweet rifle but its like a 45 year old quarterback spending more time on the bench than in the game. It's hard to stay on target and heats up quick.

This year I'm leaving the 22-250 home and taking a 17 Rem Fireball. Sure the 22-250 generates many "splody" finishes, but I'm guessing the little Fireball will make acrobats out of the rats and dogs as well.

Down the road, I can add a 20 Vartarg barrel and have even more fun.

I remember years ago when I set up a Savage 110 FP in 300 Win…

175 gr MKs….

What the hell was I thinking ?

Over the past 25+ years I’ve built and used…p/dogs as targets
20 BR
20 Vartarg
20 Practical
20-222
223
223 Improved
6BR
6XC
260 Improved
300 Win
Probably the best splat factor would be the 223 AI with 53 V max
The sweetest would be the 20-222 and 40 V max
These are heavy Savage s/shots on the table weighing 17-18#
Slowed down over the recent years…thinning the herd so to say

Okay, now I'm "Gold". ;)

Used the same avatar I've used on other forums for years. It's the badge of Naval Amphibious Assault, originated during WWII. Someone else here on AS uses the roadrunner, so don't want to step on his toes.

My old military signature avatar from RVN that I use on at least one other forum from 'way back':

So sorry Mike, no "beep-beep" for now. (But I'll admit I watched those cartoons with my young son back in the day. Still funny!)

Rick you always were and always will be!
Glad to see the avatar back, brings to mind the Saubier days.
Thanks Matt.

I know I'm not the only one who misses Saubier and all the great information shared there. Pity it went away, and all that great small caliber data has been lost. Good thing for AS or we'd all be flailing about lamenting the loss of our old internet haunt. This place has become home to many names I used to see on Saubier. And our leader Paul does an outstanding job of keeping this place up and running reliably and keeping the miscreants out too.

If I was to go long on chucks I'd use my 6x6.8 spc, 90g sierra, 3039 fps.
No chucks on the ranches I shoot on though, just pdogs.
