PD & Rockchuck Shooter's

For either pd's or chucks at distance, the 22-250AI - 50BT@4225- over the years has been used more than anything else. For pure nastiness on chucks the .257WBY - 100gr. Sierras @ 4000 - is just fun.
Those 100 grain Sierras were the standard load that I used in my 257 wby many years ago. Deer, ground hogs, fox.
The 87 grain Sierras would really “scatter” a ground hog or fox also!

The Sierra 80 blitz and the 85 hpbt give spectacular results in my 7.5 twist Krieger, and factory 40x 243. So much so that I bought a tacticam to take this year. I'm 22 cal., the 40 bal tip in my 22 250ai 7 tw is pretty nasty too, but hard to hit with that light of a bullet much past 500. Allot of the splatter factor has to do with how fast it's spinning

Agreed! I lean towards "Overkill". I always take two or three rifles, a 223 or 6PPC for under 300, my 6-284 or 25-284 for out to 500 yards or so, and the under construction 257 Banshee and the BJ 131gr heavies for as far as I can see them. I might have gone a bit overboard, purchasing a Vortex Impact 4000; but I always want to be the weak link, not my equipment.

What twist rate on your dasher? How do the 80gr ELD VT shoot in the dasher?
It’s either a 7.5 or an 8. I’m not home to check. I’m a big fan of the ELD-VT. I’m running them at 3200fps with a pretty conservative load. I didn’t see a reason to run them much faster. My longest shot last trip was 679 yards in some serious wind.

During an outing here last year shooting sage rats and rockchucks, I was sitting on my bench glassing for the next participant and spied a jackwabbit sneaking along a fenceline in the sage at a lasered 226 yards. A chip-shot for my Cooper 20VT, but I decided he was on "the list" that day.

The Nosler 32gr Varmageddon over RL-7 at 3,700 fps shows what a "good" jackwabbit looks like after impact.

Then we went back to glassing for sage rats; it was a good day.
Just wait till you see what your .22 Creed does with that 62 ELDVT!

There’s tons of great combinations. It boils down to how much recoil and muzzle flip a person is willing to deal with.
AGREE, with This ^^^^
Now that, I KNOW "What",.. I "know", I want, NO, Muzzle "Jump" w/ minimal recoil,.. to, NONE !
My, Braked .22-250 at, 3,550 fps with, 50 gr. V-Maxes, is MY, "Holy Grail" Rifle for, Sage Rats, to,.. 300 yards !
I'm very,.. HAPPY to have, found,.. THIS,.. "Combo"!
I'm SURE that, there are other, Good "Combinations", tho !
The "Tapered", Case Design of, the .old 22-250 Rem allows for, "Down Loading" a Bit with,.. great, ACCURACY

Been at it seriously since 1968, and agree that the 22-250 is most excellent for coyotes, LR rockchucks and the like, but it's a barrel burner in a hot sage rat patch. Seen at least three of them totally destroyed in just over two days shooting ground squirrels here when we were loaded with copious amounts of rats.

The "old" 223 is about the best sage rat caliber if a guy was to own just one rifle.

It was my first rifle when introduced to the rat scene. It keeps crossing my mind as an essential for the rat arsenal. But I never like the tapered case, I would have chambering problems from time to time. When I got back into the scene, I wanted a big boy 22 CF. I considered the 22-250, 22-250AI, the 22 Creedmoor. All three are barrel burners, one you have to fireform brass and the other one seemed to be the more logical choice. By the time I got something half accurate to fireform, then fireform 1000 pieces of brass, it would be time to rebarrel the AI. However, I sometimes think I went overboard bringing on a CM for rats. So, I have since decided to designate the CM for LR rock chucks, and simply to another build. The other caliber is a must and is a primary choice for me in the rat patch is the 223 as Rick mentioned. I built one around the Hornady 40 grain Vmax on a Terminus Apollo (Single Shot), Benchmark 26-inch HB and 14T.

Are you referring to the Sierra 85 gr HPBT #1530?

The .22-250 Rem case CAN easily Be, "Down Loaded" to .223 Velocities or, LESS with, H-4895, IMR 4895, Varget, powders,. etc. and it's, STILL,.. Very Accurate ( Great Tapered, Case Design, Just use, Caution, on Shoulder BUMP ! ).
The Only,.. Small to Large Varmint Cartridge that, anyone, really Needs,.. IF,.. a Handloader.
50-52 grain, Bullets at, 3,400- 3,500 FPS with, NO,.. Muzzle "Jump" and SUB 1/2 MOA, "Works" for,.. Me !
One MUST Learn to, PACE themselves, on a HOT Day of, PD or Sage Rat shooting, tho ! Cool Head= COOL Barrel !
I'll NEVER be without, a .22-250 Rem or Ai as, they ARE so,.. "Variable",.. in USE !
From, Sage Rats/ PD's ( w/ 40gr- 52 gr. ) to, Yotes ( w/ 55's - 60's at, 3,500 ) and even, Deer with, the RIGHT Bullet
