PD & Rockchuck Shooter's

What is your cartridge of choice for long range that gives you complete devastating results? I had the following rifles built for both PD's and Rockchucks. Still haven't shot them, however.

-Ruger No. 1 22 Creedmoor (9T for Hornady 62-grain ELD-VT)
-Howa 6 Creedmoor (10T for Hornady 80-grain ELD-VT)

Regards,
Mike

Depends on your definition of long range and devastation. My 204R with 39gr Sierra BK’s will lift up a pd and lay him out at 400 yards but doesn’t really tear them up. Less energy at longer distance reduces damage. 220 Swift with 60 Vmax splatters them all over the prairie at 400 and still hits hard at 500. When I lived in Montana I used to show off with a 6mm-06. 70 Sierra and 75 Vmax bullets hit very hard at 600. I once built a 20BR to shoot 50gr Berger at 700 plus range pd’s and hit many but they just tipped over. When Berger quit making the 50 I tried 40vmax out to 600+. Pretty good blow ups out to 500 but again it just laid them over as the energy decreased.
Nice firearms you have there maybe you are on the right track with those ELD bullets. I’m looking forward to more information about them.

In my 8 Twist 22 Creedmoor I shoot the 53 Vmax. I don't think your bullet choices are going to give explosive results as often as a true varmint bullet. What I have read and understand is the jackets are thicker on the VT's. The match bullets and VLD's have not always performed well for me on varmints regardless of high velocity.

My new 257 Weatherby shooting 87 Grain TNT's at 3800fps should be pretty dramatic! My first outing a couple of weeks ago we shot 35 chucks on one property in four hours and 16 the next day in six hours. Still some snow in Idaho.

Most of the chucks were shot with my 22.250 shooting a very low BC 52 grain Speer Varmint HP. Plenty accurate and explosive out to 500 yards.

Really nice #1. Never seen a pic rail on one. Hope she shoots as well as she looks!

Well, the reason for the bullet choice was for long range accuracy (400+ yards). The other rifles will give me the explosive results. I hear you on the bullet choice. I guess I'm trying to get the best of both worlds.

I thought a fair bit on a 22CM. Then acquired a quality 22BR, no regrets. If I had it to do over I would go with one of the improved cases on the 22BR.
Buddy built a 22CM, it is a death ray.
I feared losing a barrel pretty quick with no “adult supervision” on colony varmints.

Back in the day I shot both 223 and 22-250. The 223 using 40's and the 250 with a 55's. Only till you sell your 22-250 and shoot beside your friend who is shooting a 250 and you're shooting the 223 can you see the night and day difference and really appreciate the entertainment! That was on sage rats though.

It didn’t seem to matter when I went to the dog towns. Out to 500 ish, the 22-250, Swift, and big sixes and a plastic tipped varmint bullets will “decorate the landscape” with prairie dog.
On big eastern ground hogs, they can absorb some bullet energy without showing much carnage, other than head shots which can be exciting. The 6 mm AI that I had or the 240 Weatherby loaded with 75 grain Vmax, 70 grain blitz kings, 80 grain blitz will all bust up a large whistle pig quite well.
Good times!

During an outing here last year shooting sage rats and rockchucks, I was sitting on my bench glassing for the next participant and spied a jackwabbit sneaking along a fenceline in the sage at a lasered 226 yards. A chip-shot for my Cooper 20VT, but I decided he was on "the list" that day.

The Nosler 32gr Varmageddon over RL-7 at 3,700 fps shows what a "good" jackwabbit looks like after impact.

Then we went back to glassing for sage rats; it was a good day.

For either pd's or chucks at distance, the 22-250AI - 50BT@4225- over the years has been used more than anything else. For pure nastiness on chucks the .257WBY - 100gr. Sierras @ 4000 - is just fun.

When the 257 WBY is completely sorted, you'll love it. Just nasty. But, you've been the rockchuck's worst nightmare for a long time. And after all the chucks you've dispatched.......when it's your time for heaven, there'll be several 12ft tall angry chucks standing there at the gates with arms crossed and smirky smiles, and they'll say "we've been waiting for you. We have plans, heh heh".
