Best 223 bullet for 1:8 twist

Hornady has changed their min recommended twist rate for the 75gr ELD-M from 1:8 to 1:7. Last lot I purchased were all marked 1:7 on the box.

AB Quantum SG calculator comes out with marginally stable in 1:8 at 2700fps.

Not saying they won't shoot but.......
Are you accounting for the length of the plastic tip?

JBM ballistics puts the 75eld m in a 1:8 at 2800 fps, sea level and 60* at 1.554 - so fully stable

AB doesn't ask for length. Just enter the actual bullet. Hornady has 1:7 min twist printed on the 75 ELD-M boxes.

Here brother,
I have been referring to this book alot lately.
It has to be by far the best book on rifle accuracy i have ever read. It explains everything
There is a cool section on savage arms floating bolt
How different rifle perform and why
Load details
Important math equations for accuracy nuts.
This book opened a world of knowledge for me..
Maybe it will be helpful for others also
Its worth
2800$.with the headaches and money it will save you
.but sells for 28$
Dot go buy a sleeve of chew
Dot go out for a 12pack and smokes
Skip the restaurant at break time and pack a lunch.
What im say-n is find 28$ and buy this book and read it over and over untill you comprehend its information.
Hahaha
This book sits in my reloading library because it has information i constantly referring back too
But thats just me.
Just trying to be help and spread the accuracy ❤️ Luv

I shoot the 75g ELDMs from a R700 223 Wylde with a 28" Bartlein HV 8 twist at 3000fps and it shoots really good out to 800. They are cheap and offer the best LR ballistics from a 223, besides the 88-95g bullets from a 7 twist. Hornady magically changed the twist rate on the box, after working for years and years, and thousands of 8 twist barrels later. Shot this group at 600y last week. CTC probably went closer to 2"

The only other bullet I would consider is the Berger 80.5s but they are considerably more expensive than ELDMs. I also use it for coyotes and believe the ELDMs do a better job of opening up at longer distances.

My savage model 12 has its factory 1:9 and shoots the 75gr ELD fine out to 500 yds. I wasn't sure if it would or not, but it does.

I have two 1:9 twist .223s that shoot 77 gr SMKs, TMKs and Berger OTMs accurately.

In the 12 FV 26-in barrel specified as 1:9 twist (actually measured at 1:8.75) at 100 yards;
69 gr bullets averaged 0.276 for 506 5-round groups. (69 SMKs average 0.270)
73 gr bullets averaged 0.264 for 131 5-round groups. (Hornady 73 ELD-Ms average 0.262)
77 gr bullets averaged 0.273 for 734 5- round groups. (77 SMKs average 0.267)

Never owned a 223 and will have one by Thursday and wondering where to start. Have some 8208 on hand and might grab some n140 or any other powder you recommend. Barrel is a mtu 1:8 twist, what bullet should I start with!!

was thinking 75gr eldm

75 ELDM is hard to beat. Never fails to impress.

80 smk is a favorite of mine. Just a joy to shoot.

Customers love the 80.5 Berger. I've seen some crazy small groups from that bullet.

Also, the 75 Hornady HP match shoots great too.

22.5 grains of 8208 and any of those bullets is probably going to leave you smiling.

80 SMK over H4895 is my favorite for accuracy and speed.

Im currently testing a new ACE cut rifled 28" HV 224rem Match 0.100fb barrel sent to me (shot a bunch of ACE rimfires but my first ACE cf barrel) and this thing is a hammer out the gate with 80 SMK and H4895

My .223 bolt gun with 8-twist shot most consistently with Berger 80.5 grain Full-bore bullets and Varget.

The 77SMK was one of my favorites in a 22" Savage 1:9 barrel. The bonus is they really liked a jump. Like mentioned above, they can be seated deep to use in magazines. Now days I use 73Bergers or 73ELDM's seated long. The 75ELDM's worked if the temp conditions were right. I suspect at 1:8 they would do really well. I also like the price of the Hornady bullets :)

Price/performance on the 75 ELD is decent and 8208 is a good powder.

I run mine long at 2.480", which is .010 off the lands. They like to be close to the lands in my experience.

80 grain ELD-M’s shoot well in my Ruger Varmint 1-8 twist,26” barrel,as did 80 grain A Max until they ran out.

80 Amax sure do. I have many of the 600ct 80 Amax old boxes i bought up when they were heavily discounted when thr ELD came out.

Shot some this week..
