Favorite 223 rem bullet for 1-300 yards

Just save time and shoot the 80.5 at all distances. Most likely it'll group smaller than anything else anyway no matter how far you shoot it.

I’ve seen 52gr SMKs shoot in anything from a 1:12 to a 1:7. I believe they hold as good or better water line than 69’s or 77’s. They suffer past 200yds though. If you have the 1:8”, 69 or 77 SMK, 77 Berger, 75 Berger, 73 Berger, etc, etc, etc will all shoot good groups. You’re not going to get BR level accuracy out of a 223 on a consistent basis. It will be close, but it’s simply outdone by the PPC and BR cases. But for what 99% of shooters do, the 223 is a great and maybe THE best choice.

I shoot a 1:7 Savage in 300-yard competitions. Berger 80g VLD Target, Vit N540, Lapua brass, CCI 400 primers. Velocity in the 2750fps to 2770fps range. I tried higher velocity nodes, but found the gun groups much better at a lower velocity node.

Over the next month or so I just want to ask some questions in regard to 223 rem while I gather components for this build.
Bolt gun (Kelbly or Mack Bros) mag fed.
Plan on using a 20" 1-8 twist barrel Krieger or hart barrel.
I'm deciding on Varget or N140 for powder. I'd like Varget, but the price of N140 is so much better. I also plan on using the powder for my 6br.

Curious, what's your favorite bullet for 1-300 yard shooting for the 223 rem? Feel free to share your bullet and powder combo.
