Electric Cars -- anyone own one?

That is correct. I got a notice that when my BOLT EUV comes up for inspection and registration in 2024, a $200 fee will be added to the cost of non payment of Hyway taxes because of non gasoline purchase.

I am on a pace to top 30,000 miles a year, (just rolled over 18,000), so that’s not such a big deal.

I certainly have no problem with this.
In this situation, @jackieschmidt is getting a good tax break and just paying a lump sum instead of at the pump.

In round numbers 19 cents a gallon fed tax and 20 cents Texas he pays the same as a person driving a gas car that gets around 55-60 mpg. Based on 30,000 miles a year.

Or about 500 gallons of gas

You can’t forget the fed tax

Just topped off my Tacoma tank. (maybe $20.00) The person at the pump before me just paid $220.00 for 40 gallons. (DAMN!!!) May have been diesel at $6.00 a gallon but still...:eek::eek: But I forget, that's California for you.
(where women are women and so are some of the men) They ARE  for sure.

Where I live, diesel is cheaper than same as Regular 87 gas now. Why is it so expensive in Kalifornia?

I bought a Tesla 3 base model in 2019 when I was driving to downtown Phoenix every day. With rebates and trade in I paid 32K. We switched our electric plan thru SRP and before this years price increase my bills were cheaper then before even with charging the car. With the price of fuel here it’s still cheaper for me. If you are going to charge at home get 220v. It is great for getting around town and the freeway HOV lane. When it was new we road tripped and it was not too bad. Four years later and the battery life has gone down I would not do it. I still take it as far as flagstaff.

I did not buy it to be green or think I was saving the world. We bought it for all the errands we do for kids sports, etc. It saves money.

The government pushing electric cars on everyone is stupid. They have their place, but they are not for everyone and if everyone has one the cost of electricity will sky rocket. Not to mention the grid is not big enough for everyone to charge cars, California proved this last summer.

A little over four years we are happy with the purchase. It does what we need it to do. Will I buy another? No idea.

Absolutely no idea, huh? That perplexes me, with your extensive experience with it.

I want to see how long the battery lasts. If it doesn’t make it until warranty or dies shortly after warranty. If it lasts another 6-8 years and I am close to retirement with my youngest being ready to graduate I wouldn’t need one. If we decide to move away from a metro area I won’t need an electric. I have also had a take home work vehicle since 2020 and hoping to have one until I retire. A lot of factors as to why I might not get another.

LOL, thats a good one !

I believe the answer is; because at the state level, we have evolved into a one party legislature. There are near zero Republicans or conservatives to slow down or derail bad ideas. Governor Hair Gel signs just about everything that comes across his desk. A few years ago, Kalifornians voted against a bill that would have limited taxes on fuel. With the aide of media, people are easily swayed.

Yesterday, I paid $5.09 a gallon at Costco and was happy to buy it that cheap.

Not close to zero, actually. Republicans compose 22.5% of the Assembly and 20% of the Senate.

The money thing is not that big of a deal with me. It’s going to take a certain amount of money to go from point A to point B regardless of what you drive.

The pure convenience is what I really like. When you have a 92 mile commute each day, 6 days a week, simply not having to stop and get gas is a huge “quality of life” issue.

When I get home, or to my Shop, I simply plug it in.

Makes sense. It's essentially a scaled-up upscale golf cart.

Keep or pitch... I found this interesting.
Not sure if it was already posted or discussed, so I apologize if this is old news to folks here.

Ford CEO takes a road trip in an F150 Lightning...

Taking a trip lIke that in any kind of electric seems a little dumb.

In the link, they keep talking about those very high output superchargers. Well, about two weeks after I got mine, I got a notice from Chevy that they did not recommend using these. They charge the battery way to fast, possibly causing battery cell damage. A level one or two are what is recommended.
Mine are level 2, the unit is a “Juice Box”

There was an article recently (Edit: In Car And Driver) about 2023's longest-range BEVs. The top 3 were:

1. Lucid Air: 516 Miles (Base price: $139,650)
2. Tesla Model S: 405 Miles (Base price: $91,630)
3. Hyundai Ioniq 6: 361 Miles (Base price: $46,615)

Out of curiosity I used ABetterRoutePlanner.com (considered the very best) to compare the Lucid to an ICE vehicle for driving from Reno to Lewiston. Since the shortest and best route is only 659 miles (per Google) I figured the Lucid might only need one charge stop. Wrong. One needs to err on the side of prudence when driving a BEV cross-country in the Intermountain West. Careful (longer) routing is required for charger access, and charging adjusted to balance safety margins against charge time.

Here are the two maps, Lucid's (left) generated by ABRP, vs ICE (right) generated by Google Maps. Assume abiding by all speed limits, and the BEV starting at 90% charge, with minimum 10% remaining at the end.

Click on the maps to enlarge.

The best Lucid route was 692 miles, requiring 4 charging stops (51 min total) and 12 hr 19 min.

The best ICE route was 659 miles and (not counting 1 or 2 gas stops, say 5 or 10 min. total) 10 hr 46 min.

If you're counting, the EV traveled 33 miles farther, 1h 23m longer (subtracting max 10 min. for gas.)

Neither account for dining or "bio break" stops, but those would break even. But the EV data assume optimal ambient (no A/C or heater required) which would have negligible or no effect on ICE travel.

Since the Lucid is so expensive, I can post the results for the Tesla and Hyundai, not nearly as competitive, if anyone's interested. (The Tesla took 6 charges, the Hyundai 7.)

I would not trust ABRP much. I used it to plan a route that I have traveled many times and know it is 103miles and takes 1hr/45min to run. ABRP projected 1hr with a recharge stop. There are bugs.

California ALWAYS has that "special blend". If you'll notice, California is ALWAYS higher than any other state. I laugh when someone says gas in their state is around $3.50??? California hasn't seen gas prices that low for as long as I can remember. Think the taxes alone are just about higher that the gas itself.
And do they REALLY need an excuse to jack up gas prices?? Once up there, see how long it takes to come down, if ever.
Gas was $5.39 for unleaded yesterday at Cherron no, less with the refinery maybe 50 miles away? What's wrong with this picture? At least my Chevron stock stays up.:cool: The gift that keeps on giving. :D
