Where to move?

Couldn't tell ya, lumber and plywood I know. I do know I saw the writing on the wall when P.C. sold to Weyerhaeuser saw the same thing 35 years ago in Washington state with Scott Paper company

My conservative { Republican }U. S. Senator @ 89 { ? } just doesn't get it. I came to the conclusion that he is a closet Conservative DEMOCRAT. Senator we need term limits.

I used to laugh at Plum Creek at the full page ads that they would take out in the Daily Interlake newspaper claiming to be sustainable forestry, what a joke anybody who worked in the timber industry like me at the time new it was.
When they put a new CEO in place who was a developer and classified some of there ground Higher Better Use you knew it was over, every single tree that had a 2x4 was cut and put on a truck down the road.

By golly this IS a ten year old thread…. Wish those date stamps had bigger print.

Meh, still useful info. A lot has changed in our country in the last ten years. I imagine more people are on the move in the last three or 4 years, than they were ten years ago.

I left MD on 2007 for the same reasons.
Nanny state and too expensive.
Went to TX for 10 years. Much better, but has it's cons too. Folks always mention no income tax, but you WILL pay more in crazy high property tax. Sales tax varies, but I was at 8.25%.
The illegal aliens are getting worse each year. The crime rate in major cities has skyrocketed & gangs are in most of the big cities like Houston. I left TX in 2019 for Alabama. BEST MOVE EVER! No income tax on any retirement income.
No property tax over 65. Housing is very reasonable. Alabama is very Conservative & religious. Very gun friendly too. Plenty of hunting & fishing, all types. Stay away from Birmingham or Montgomery as they can have some bad areas. As mentioned, Huntsville is nice, but there's plenty of small rural towns to chose from.

What is going to interesting is what is going to happen to the blue states and cities over time. Everything seems to switch back and force over long cycles. The blue libs have won. And now what? Keep on taxing and spending? Oh wait, presidents will spend billions on green jobs that employ unions and keep ‘em voting.. rinse and repeat.

Growing up in Idaho, I was puzzled by Louisiana's license plate "Sportsman's Paradise". I thought that's where I was living! Elk, moose, mule deer, whitetail deer, pronghorns, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, black bear, grizzly bear, three species of marmots, prairie dogs, ground squirrels, tree squirrels, chinook salmon, steelhead, cutthroat, rainbow, brook and lake trout, white sturgeon, largemouth and smallmouth bass, whitefish, catfish, turkey, pheasant, valley quail, mourning dove, collared dove, blue grouse, ruffed grouse, sage grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, chukar partridge, grey partridge, mountain lion, bobcat, marten, fisher, mink, wolverine, red fox, kit fox, coyote, and now again plenty of grey wolves. Just off the top of my head. Of course no alligators, so there's that ...

Idaho it is!

I have to say that I spent 50 years building houses for people with a lot more money than I’ll ever have, some were affluent some not but in all those years I never once thought that they were better than I or counted their money or felt they were better parents or felt my kids couldn’t hang with their kids.
Every one here has value and positive input to share, please don’t feel as you don’t belong.
I had to think about this for a bit. The hypocrisy is what riled me up. Money don't make the man. That much I've known for a long time.

Thanks for your reply.

I am enjoying N. Idaho. Moved here in Jan 2021 from Oregon. Even though ID has both a sales tax and an income tax, the cost of living is less here than either OR or WA. Property takes here are a third of what they were in Western Oregon, but house prices are high because this is a place conservatives are escaping to.

We have four seasons. We do have a real winter, but it only seems to last from the last week of Nov to the first week of Jan. During that time the slow plows are busy and a snowblower is a very good idea to keep the driveway clear. Summers are hot in Jul and Aug.

Me and the wife are contemplating the same kind of move, actually it's been our plan for the last 20 years once we retired. Well now I've been retired for a year and she is just a couple months away. The wife has always wanted the mountains and I told her that was fine with me as long as "Rocky" was in front of mountains. We don't want a big house or to be in a town, we live in the sticks here in MD and would like to keep it that way, maybe be within an hour or so of civilization. Montana? Idaho? Wyoming?

I just drove thru some pretty country in eastern Tennessee. My wife said “we should sell Texas and buy something here.” It was raining!
Lots of rain and big timber clearing storms that wreck houses are frequent now, too frequent... Humidity will melt you in the summer as well. I am a lifelong resident of Tn but I hate it here now, it’s out with the old and in with the “new” and the new isn’t good.
