Top Notch threading inserts and tool holder

Partial profile….all threads come out great. 16, 18, 24 TPI doesn’t matter

I tried the full profile inserts and it just wasn’t for me.

The full profile inserts do have a different feel to them. The ER60 is the easy button though. Like FireMedic said, no need for a chicken groove. I'd say these can get close to the shoulder than your upright tool, just due to the width of the tool.

Shop around for the insert. When I got them, you could get them individually on MSC. A 10-pack will last you an entire lifetime. I've yet to wear one out.. and I've cut all kinds of hard stuff with it.

It's pretty obvious after doing some shopping that particular insert has some Chinese knockoffs on eBay.

I'll get some from MSC

Buy a 10 pack from MSC when they run a sale and you’re set for life. I’ve probably got 100 barrels on my first insert and haven’t even rotated it.

I got the CarMex tool holder too.

Check with Jim at Mesa tool. He has a insert holder to thread upside down and reverse on your Lathe. Only way to thread away from a shoulder!

I went full profile 15 years ago and will never go back to a 60 degree insert. Never could get the same finish.
I really like the full profile inserts, cut and hit it with cratex and done.
I can blast through brass in just a few steps and spring cuts with them and get good results and not have to file tops down on our fishing rod butt cap studs 53F431A3-F03B-4926-A333-BF7E66A86CCC.jpeg

I've never found it necessary to polish the top of the treads since I went full profile. When I use a standard 60 degree insert for threading I always turn the OD 5-10 thou undersize. It leaves a nice flat. No file needed. In fact you had better turn the OD smaller. If you don't you're depending on the mating threads to be perfect. The threads will have a radius in the bottom that will interfere with a sharp topped thread and inserts do wear and chip. When I did things on a manual machine I knew when to start checking the fit by the width of the flat on top. I could get to within a pass or two before checking.

Yep
As soon as see top form I start checking plus I dial in total needed cut on cross slide and when my compound is close to 0 I’m close as w second indicator.

I struggled a bit when I started using carbide but after learning some of the things carbide wants I wouldn’t go back to HSS or standard 60 degree universal.

Left insert is flat on top. Middle insert has a K chip breaker, the right insert also has a K chipbreaker. It is just adding positive rake in these inserts.
