Do it yourself Stock making thread

How do u enhance darker grains / highlights in a walnut stock? My wood has some nicer figure in the Buttstock area that I would like to bring out. Looking at putting a couple of coats of tru-oil on for initial sealing then when I am happy with the fit, clear coating the stock.

Dont put oil on it if you plan to clear it. Get bc’z to talk about dies

Dusty is right, no oil if your gonna clear it.
I personally don't like stain as it is muddy in appearance.
I use Transtint dyes diluted with water, I purchase dyes through Stewmac Luther supply.
Walnut I use medium brown "strong" mix
Copper brown and red blended medium strong mix
Vintage amber medium strength.
Wooden paint sticks work as a good indicator for dye strength when mixing.

If you want to darken and also fill the grain in walnut, you can make a paste with rottenstone and a finish. It's easy and works well very well. The black streaks in walnut will get darker but the surrounding wood shouldn't get appreciably darker(I have not tried it on sapwood though). A catalyzed oil like minwax antique oil is easy, cheap and available at ace hardware.
Dewaxed Shellac can also be used to highlight grain and will seal the wood without interfering with other finishes but doesn't fill the grain at all.

Bout time to mow that table

Sanding then polishing to just a touch off full gloss. It was blinding me with the reflection, showing every fingerprint, ......o_O This one is a hunter, not a show gun.
This was an experiment. We wondered what it would look like. Now that you’ve seen it, you can send a stock to Bc’z and he’ll put a shine on it.
