Do it yourself Stock making thread

A couple of hours later workshop covered in fine sawdust lol. But its a good feeling i reckon . I will have my duplicator running again in the next week i hope. Well afterci finish the current jib of machining thesecali picatinny rails. Cnt wait ro see it finished Josh

Note to self: Don’t go in the shop angry. I grabbed the big rotary sander, didn’t check the grit, and had at forming the stock. In 30 seconds I’d gone past my marks and had to re-inlet the whole top side 1/4” deeper.:mad::mad: Damned 80 grit! Thankfully, I’d left enough extra wood on the bottom. Got that done, flipped it over and set up to inlet the bottom metal. Right about when I was making the last cut, the bearing on my router bit imploded and made a mess of it. Good thing I had two hands on the router! I stopped work before I screwed anything else up.
This brings me to show how I make filler to thicken epoxy for small patches.
I’m cheap and hate paying $30-40 for a can of filler material that doesn’t always match the wood I’m using. I gather a pile of chips from the blank and feed them thru a coffee grinder I liberated from the kitchen. Don’t tell the wife! I feed them thru a few times until I get a nice fine powder.42CC98AD-D97E-40E2-A60E-982C818D8755.jpeg80BEF478-97AC-4BCB-9FF6-6FF5559BB579.jpeg

well Im sorry about the mess up but I can say Ive done ALOt of stuff like that so you are far from the only one. On a positive note you have taught me something as i have always used wood glue and saw dust for these type patches and i think the finer dust and the clear epoxy would help the patch blend in better. thanks

PS- mabie the trouble has been i never had a coffee grinder but i can fix that.

West System epoxy takes 8-12 hours to harden. The “bar top” epoxy takes 12-14 hours. I’ve been using the little Devcon 20 minute Epoxy syringes lately and it’s been working well. You have to be careful of adding too much filler. I want a mayonnaise to peanut butter consistency. Too much filler makes the mix too dry to stick well.
The coffee grinder is from those long gone days when I had more energy and ground my own, fresh. These days I stumble into the kitchen like a zombie.

I posted about my screw up to let guys know it’s not always sunshine and roses here. Screw ups happen and can be dealt with.

Yes west system takes a but to dry depending on if your using the fast or slow hardener. I use the slow hardener for all my work . Also i use the 411 and 413 powder fillers and micro beed filler aswell.

I re-painted this stock 3x's.
Or was it 4??
I can tell ya the last shoot I had it finish sanded in 2000 grit ready to start buffing when I turned around and bumped it off my scissor stand barking the paint on the chains and hooks, luckily I caught it before it hit the ground.
Stripped it and started over.

Then there was the cheek piece on another stock I was polishing when I caught a edge with my buffer ripping it outta my hand sending it flying across the shop.

Knowing how to fix and hide mistakes is the mark of a true craftsman.
You got this my friend !!

Anyone can make a good piece. Mistakes happen and how a person repairs them is a better mark of their ability.

As I've heard a few blokes in the trade say it will buff out she be rite. I have a couple here that I've made that have a few issues with them but nobody would know what there looking at to see them. Tomorrow's another day Josh so should all be good by then

From the duplicator to the Match. It’s rewarding to make and shoot your own creation.
