After finishing the honey-do list, I got in some more shop time. Patched my mistake and moved forward. It won’t look too bad once it’s finished. I added some ebony to the forend, just because. Final forming this week, hopefully.

This brings me to show how I make filler to thicken epoxy for small patches.
I’m cheap and hate paying $30-40 for a can of filler material that doesn’t always match the wood I’m using. I gather a pile of chips from the blank and feed them thru a coffee grinder I liberated from the kitchen. I feed them thru a few times until I get a nice fine powder.View attachment 1355984View attachment 1355985

Josh, try saving the powder from you random orbital sander. It is PERFECT for repairs and imperfections. I have quart freezer bags of white oak, red oak, black walnut, pine, etc. All in a bin, ready to use whenever I need to. My Bosch has a box off the backend that collects it. I use med hardener for everything except big pours.

Sanded to 1000 then the full Arrowood oil treatment or would you like it more of a flat finish oil?

Ok. I’ll give it the full polish treatment, oil to gloss. This wood is very hard so it should hold up well. I hit a spot with 400 today, just to see, and it looked glossy. I can’t wait to see what 1000 looks like. Good choice on the wood. I might get some more and make one for myself.

When i made duck calls from it i only polished it with denim on the lathe and it came out looking like glass

I do some small part powder coating from time to time. Sample
powder colors that were sent to me make for good fillers.

Butt pad installed, forend formed. Grip cap and final grip area forming next, then final sand and finish.

The new puppy got me up at 5:30 so I had my coffee and hit the shop early. Almost done! Sanded to 400, waiting on filler. The local Woodcraft store was out of the color I needed so I had to order it on Amazon. A special thanks to Dale (@hogpatrol), who came running up with a #3 contoured barreled action to help check the inlet for fit!
