7mm PRC?

Hard to believe nobody makes dies for the 6.8 western after it's been out for over a year. No third party brass manufacturers making brass for it either. Both huge negatives for that cartridge. Things to definitely consider
Yikes
One benefit of a 7 PRC is 300 prc brass is already out

Personaly I feel the 284 to 7RM is the sweet spot for power in a 7mm, if I’m going to 80 + grains of powder I’d suck it up and go 30 caliber.

I wouldnt say that, at least on the custom rifle side they are very popular. ADG and Lapua make brass for the 6.5 and 300 PRC. They are not going any where in my opinion. They are magnums, so they are never going to see the popularity of something like the 6.5 creedmoor.
I think the PRC cartridges are here to stay for sure. The 6.8W hasn't had enough time on the scene but it hasn't made the same impression the PRCs have. People that want a fast twist .277 cartridge will get a barrel fit to their current action or have a custom built. The 6.8 will appeal to non-reloaders.

Another that most people aren't even aware of is the 7mm Blaser mag. It's a well designed case that's kind of a cross between the 7 WSM and Rem 7mm mag. It's a non belted shorter and fatter case than the 7 Rem mag but not as short and fat as the 7 WSM. Norma makes the brass and it has a case capacity of 83-84gr H2o. The case kind of looks like a shorter version of the 7mm Dakota with it's 30 degree shoulder angle and relatively long neck.

Mine is built on a LA Rem 700 but with a OAL of only 3.260 w/180 Berger's it would be a good candidate for a Tikka. A 26in Hart and 68.5gr RL26 pushes those 180's 3088-3100. Could push it harder but that seems to be the sweet spot in mine and haven't lost a primer pocket yet.

I don't imagine the BR world would be interested, they tend to like less case capacity, but for everything else it's a good 7mm option but unfortunately it has very little industry support.

Where do you find brass? I purchased some Norma about a year ago and I cannot find any more. The bad part is that about 25% of the brass would not hold a primer after the first firing, and I am not pushing them very hard at all. 190 Bergers at about 2,950 (30 inch barrel and N165).

I bought a bunch of it a few years ago shortly after I had my 7 Blaser built. I don't remember if it was MidSouth or Natchez maybe but when I stocked up on it they actually had it on sale for right around $1 per piece. I bought my Redding dies from one of those two as well but last time I looked I'm not sure anyone stocks Redding 7 Blaser dies.

Norma is certainly not as tough and won't take the abuse Lapua will but if you're losing primer pockets after the first firing, in any brass, I'd say your load is likely a lot hotter than you think. Those 195's have a pretty long bearing surface and I know some guys that shoot 7 Rem mag that had trouble with them pressuring out before they could get the speed they wanted out of them. I never figured I could get the 195's running fast enough to benefit me anything over the 180 Berger's. I've shot a few 175 ELD-X and they shot well and ran over 3100 pretty easy. I'd like to get my hands on some Hornady 180 ELD-M and give them a go because those things have a hellish advertised BC of .796 (G1) & .401 (G7)

That .796 for me at 1000' ASL is .750. Obviously at higher elevations, that BC looks alot better

Backfire on Utube just posted a video today about the 6.8 Western and at about the 14:20 minute mark he talks about the new 7mm PRC. Supposedly it uses a long-action.
I really didn't see a real market for it and I really think that's why die manufacturers aren't jumping on board. My prediction is it's another 22 Nosler.

It’s not like 350 legend where it meets a need in the market. The 6.8 is a PRC with a 0.013 larger bullet. Why not just go to 7mm by going a mere 0.007” more?

I find the talk of the 7mm PRC off of the 300 PRC interesting.

Several years ago, Gunwerks & Hornady colaborated in necking down the 375 Ruger case to 7mm.
Ended up with a proprietary cartridge called the 7mm LRM (Long Range Magnum).

Makes me wonder if Gunwerks sold off on the rights, or if Hornady did enough of a change to make it their own?

For the 7mm-6.5 PRC, is it a PRC?
Or a 7mm RCM?

Guy from Gunwerks posted in this thread, doesn't sound like there is any selling of "rights" nor would I expect there to be. What unique IP would he be selling?

Post in thread '7 PRC SAAMI approved' https://www.longrangehunting.com/threads/7-prc-saami-approved.294509/post-2454981

Or, you could just build a straight 284 which is equal to the necked up 6.5 PRC case. Lapua 284 brass would sure make life easier for you and probably lots of reamers already available. Just a thought.
The problem with the 284 is that there's too many Reamer variations and it makes it extremely difficult to get dies to match properly. 7-65prc is a good option and bullet central makes a sizing die for it

The 7-6.5 and 7-300 PRC cases are wildcats. The saami 7 PRC is different than both of them. So you will have to decide what you want. I will stick with the 7-6.5 for competition shooters but the 7 prc will make a nice hunting case. And and even better .30 case ;)
