long range hunting

That dude Backfire (youtube) does a rundown on cartridges and FT-LB energy. Fairly in depth.. I am absolutely no expert in this. 1000 yards is a looooooooong way for a hunting rifle.. Oh wait I'm not an expert..
Yeeeeaaaahhhhhh......
After watching his &!tch session on a Caldwell BR front rest (that he used with hunting rifles with front studs in them, then tosses it into the bed of his truck) i unsubscribed from Backfire.

No lecture offered by me just some advice offered in good faith from a long-time hunter.

Access someone or entity that specializes in long range hunting and get their advice on the equipment you'll need to maximize your chances of success.

When you get your equipment set up, i.e., scope, rifle with the recommended caliber, drop / wind charts, etc., take the equipment to somewhere that is safe to shoot at the distances you intend to shoot game animals. Shoot several rounds at those distances on a target that reflects the vital area of the animal you intend to hunt. Shoot in the position and in the manner in which you will hunt. Test yourself under different environmental conditions, i.e., wind and mirage. This will tell you everything you want to know about shooting game at "long distances."

It's a three-prong approach: 1. capable equipment, 2. knowledge to make long shots to account for wind and mirage, and 3. field marksmanship skill limitations.

You have too be kidding. How many animals are lost and just wounded at 1000 yrds, by these long range hunters, before they actually recover a animal ? Let alone field dress and pack the meat out ? Hunting is getting within 400 yrds or less and then killing your animal. The other is just sniping.

Your kidding right?

The days of Point Blank Shooting at 350 yards or less are history. Have you seen a video of 1-shot 1-kill at deer size animal on at 1,000 yards? No wind is a super bonus for such shot.

I enjoy shooting at long range but wouldn’t think about hunting that way. I’m not lecturing anybody, but theres Enough time in flight that whatever you’re shooting at can easily take a step and the result would be a gut shot animal a half mile away. Just not my idea of fun.

My .270 WSM, pushes, a 140 Berger bullet, almost, 3,200 FPS and it's STILL going, OVER, 2,000 FPS at, 800 Yards.
I'm a firm believer in exceeding, the Manufacturers MINIMUM "Mushrooming" Velocity, by 200 FPS for Big Game !
I have shot, 5" dia, groups ( on a NON Windy, Day ) at, 700 yards with, it,..
The Bullet, ALSO DRIFTS about,.. 36 Inches, in a 10 MPH Wind at, 750 Yards,.. THINK ABOUT,.. THAT !
I frequent LRH but, I will NOT, get "Involved" in those, Long Range, BIG Gun, "discussions",..
It's Pointless with, most of those, Internet, "Experts" and you will probably not ever, win a discussion as somebody is always, shooting,.. a Bigger, better, Bullet, more Powder, Longer Barrel, etc.
PS; Needless to say,.. I don't go looking for, Long Range Shots on, Big Game !
