long range hunting

I am looking to see what a rifle should be capable of shooting at 1000yds to be considered ethical for long range hunting. I have just completed a project using a trued 700 with a 27in hart barrel chambered in 7rum. the problem i am having is to much speed, using 175smk with a reduced load with rl-22 i am still getting 3150fps. the problem with this is with this load the case capacity is not being utilized. I was at the range today and have three five shot groups getting around 10in at a grand. Is this good enough for ethical long range hunting? Also what powers can i use to fill up the case and not destroy my barrel. i would like to stay around 3150 to 3200 for barrel life. I figure the more i can fill the case the more constant my loads will be. Thanks!

Seems you've got quite the rifle - a 27" Hart in 7mm RUM... Nice! I do sort of suspect that barrel life and a 7mm RUM are not real compatible. :D Might as well just load up whatever is your most accurate long range load. BTW - have you considered the 180 Berger VLD? Pretty serious long range bullet. I got good results using Retumbo in a .300 RUM, but have never messed with the 7mm version.

Milanuk and Rem06 are both experienced long-range riflemen. Their advice is worthwhile.

Regards, Guy

Try Retumbo....Another thing. If its a hunting gun,I don't worry much about barrel life.I run them as fast as I can if they still shoot well...I am running a 30 inch 300 Rum with 210's at darn near 3350fps.Its got about 1000 rounds down it now and the barrel was used when I got it.

IMR 4350 most excellent in 30-06
57.0 with 165gr Sierra BT
55.0 with 180 Nosler part
H4831 or RL 22 with 200gr Accubond for Long Range load, but I suggest stepping up to the 300 Win Mag or Ultra Mag for long range.

Fed 210 primer in FC brass duplicates Fed Prem loads
Love the 30-06 since boyhood

The ethics stuff is BS. 1000yd shots on living things is 100% about ethics. longrangeonly.com is the the best place IMO. I cant stand some one telling me that I cant explain how your 6.5 creedmoor is not a 1k yd elk gun because it violates ethical talk. Of course it does, because its not ethical. PS I know this is an old thread but its worth explaining.

no such thing as too much speed as out at 1000 + bullets slow down quite a lot if I am hunting at 1000 plus if I can't get 6 inch groups at a grand not suitable but that's just me and my line that I draw in the sand and that for deer the size of elk that you have in the states white-tail and such would have to be a 4 inch group or better.

I have edited my post because for some inexplicable reason I thought you were talking about a 300 RUM

But the one thing I would like to know is what twist does the barrel have

If your bullet has 1,000 lbft of energy and velocity of 1800fps at impact (1K?) with an expanding bullet and you are capable hitting a 17" target consistently at 1000 yards, you are good to go long range mountain hunting

That dude Backfire (youtube) does a rundown on cartridges and FT-LB energy. Fairly in depth.. I am absolutely no expert in this. 1000 yards is a looooooooong way for a hunting rifle.. Oh wait I'm not an expert..
