With Remington gone -- what "budget" action?

What’s the price tag to have a rem 700 “blueprinted”? Asking for a friend! And after it’s bored and stroked will it compete with the big name Bat’s, Borden’s etc...
I have a worked over Rem 700 that has always shot very small regardless of barrel or chamber (It's had 6 barrels and 3 different chamberings). My Bordens don't shoot any smaller in pick and shoot conditions up close (300yards and in). They do shoot inches smaller than the Rem at 1000yds, where I can run the Bordens much much faster. The Rem, even with all the work, still has a slight hitch in the bolt lift that upsets the rifle in the bags requiring a reset after every shot. I have $600 into the Rem on top of what it cost (my uncle gave it to me), but the work was done in the early 90s. I don't know what it would cost today.

Ill guess that the Ruger action will get a good look now
i dunno south prarie- ive got one a 77 and it was my 2nd hp rifle, so im attached to it but i wouldnt build anything off a ruger unless mabie i wanted the CF for hunting

Yes,you can take a $1000.00 truck, put 2500.00 in wheels and tires on it,several dollars in the engine and tranny. When you get ready to sell it,you have a 600.00 dollar truck. Buy a Kelbly's Atlas for your rifle and be done with it.
My point exactly. Haven't tried a Kelblys action but probably will at some point, using BAT and Borden.

I’m hoping you’re wrong on that truck analogy.

If Remington actions are such junk how come you can't even find one on this board now that the supply dried up?

Once again the silent majority has spoken. While the very vocal minority is actually the custom action people that say a Remington is a waste of time, they are clearly outnumbered by the people who know that isn't true. Even on this forum.

Budget actions have been popping up all over....Thompson Center,
  • avage Minimalist. Savage introduces a few models into the Minimalist lineup including the Mark II in green. ...
  • Mossberg Patriot Long Range Hunter. ...
  • Winchester XPR Stealth, Suppressor-Ready. ...
  • Ruger American Hunter. ...
  • Heritage Rough Rider Rancher. ...
  • Savage Axis II Precision. ...
I picked up a used Winchester M70XTR (1973), mint, hardly fired by the shape of the bore(borescoped) for a few dollars more than any one of the above, and its 10X the rifle imo. Gorgeous rifle. Keep your eye open for good deals on well made older rifles that not many appreciate.

Nature abhors a vacuum -- something will fill that. Soon we will be seeing adjectives on ads, "super-rare", and what not, for ROTM Remington actions off ADLs..

The biggest detriment to the Savage action is the lack of a good trigger.
While Savage may not have 8+ companies offering replacement triggers like Remington does, I'd take the Sharp Shooter Supply on my Savage over my Rem Timney, any day. I've shot a friend's BR Rifle Basix and it, too, is incredibly smooth.

I vote for the PGT bomber action.
Months later and you'll still be waiting for that bomber to leave the air field. Their product delivery has been hit or miss, in my experience and others I chat with.

Ruger? Ugh. I have one where the bolt travel is like dragging a cinder block across cement. But, with the right load, that gun shoots in the 2's. It works where it counts, so I don't mess with it.

If you ever had to hammer out a case from the bolt, you'd know why you need a Sako extractor!
The POS extractor is the greatest issue holding Savage actions back, IMO. That only applies when you push your loads to the max limits.

There is no doubt that Savage builds a very accurate factory gun
and there have been lots of custom rifles that have been built on Savage actions, but you will have to ask yourself, do I want to date
or marry an ugly girl????
While I appreciate a beautiful rifle, and have a few, I don't hold onto my rifles for their looks. Hafta admit, there is only one Savage in my safe that might come close to qualifying as a "good looking rifle." When I was a pup, young - dumb - and full of ---, a mentor preached to me the performance value of big and ugly. Many decades later I can confirm, he was right.

Sure is!
With the 3 lug design and 1 piece bolt, it's always been a shooter.
Won't do for single feeding rounds have to come from magazine.
Stocks and trigger options suck though.

Mine is losing the barrel nut, going shouldered with recoil lug.

@DiffEQ
Sand and polish the bolt, smooths it right out. @boltfluter can even put a lil bling on it for under a $100 including shipping.

There was an article many years ago ranking the strength of factory actions by pressure testing at levels far above proof. (Multiples) According to it, the only action tested that was stronger than a 700 was the 9 lug Mark V, which is not even close to the price of a 700.

If someone were to offer me what I paid for each 700 one by one, they will leave with all their money. When the M-70 returned to the market, the volume and choices were limited. I don’t see new owners being able to touch the under $1,000 stainless, long action magnums in blocked HS stocks that had been on shelves.

Hell let them think and believe that, there will be more of the fine old Rem 700 actions for us, that know, to buy and work with. Some just drink the cool aid without checking out rumors and things they are told.

Two cents !
Hunter and Still Active Target Shooter .
Hunting Rifles old Africa Standard.
Dangerous Game ! claw extraction..
Been punching paper for 40 years .
I have had pre War Model 70 and Pre 64 Model 70 . Won a Ton of Awards .
Had 4 Barnard Model P Won a Ton . Gave up Sling Shooting .
Built 3 F/ Class Rifles all on Remington SA 700’s .
I just Won a Long Range Regional with a 700 ?
I plan I Winning in 2021 with a 700 .
You can’t spend your way to the Winners Circle .
I will agree there are many good Actions , but selling a 700 short . When 60% of other Actions are Clones? Not me .

The Marine Corp seems to like the Model 700. Their sniper rifles are built on them.

You think it's hard finding a Remmy, try and find a CRF M-70 or a big CZ........

Remingtons aren't a waste, they just aren't the best choice for anything anymore. When they were cheap to buy and were cheap to accurize they were a great value.

The idea was always you could get a factory Remmy that would probably shoot okay and if needed, it wasn't expensive to upgrade it. In those days custom actions weren't common. A sleeved Remmy won many a benchrest match, Remmys did well in Silhouette, and were the top choice for varmint rifles. They weren't the top choice for bolt action highpower, but that was about the only competition they didn't dominate.

When custom actions started showing up and winning, Remmys were still an inexpensive way to get started and still the top choice for competitions where factory actions were used. However, nowadays the cost of a custom vs a fully worked over Remmy isn't that much and the Remmy is still missing the ability to have a features like dual ports and large barrel tenons. Add to that all the other semi-custom factory rifles and Remington just doesn't have the advantage they used to.

It's like the pre '64 M-70. They still work great, shoot well, and have an unbeatable cool factor, but the newer CRF M-70s are better actions.

The Remington 700 series had a great run, but their time is past.
