With Remington gone -- what "budget" action?

The Tikka is, a long action and is "Modified" for shorter cartridges ! IF, you want to use, a .284 Win., 7 mm Rem Mag, .300 WSM's, etc., etc. And seat, the Bullets OUT a bit, they are "Perfect" for, THAT ! They ARE a great Deal, WELL Made and very accurate if, used as a Big Game, Hunting Rifle ( Light weight and handle, WELL ) The THREE Tikka's in my Family,.. ALL, shoot great. The heaviest is, 7 .75 Pounds SCOPED ! However, I'm NOT, a big fan of the "loose" Recoil Lugs ! But, the Trigger, when adjusted properly and with, a YoDave Spring in it,.. is MANY Points, in Tikka's favor !
I have had a few Rem 700's, about 5, I think and they take MORE "work" and usually, more Dollars to make shoot "right", sometimes ! BUT,.. I like, a small Cartridge, in a SHORT Action so, I'm a big fan of, the Rem 700, too ! I have, one of the LAST, New, RR, CNC machined, Stainless Steel, Short action, Rem 700's, coming !
I'm hoping that, all the dimensions on it are, "good" as, I heard them,.. Praised and Cussed, Lately !
BOTH Rifles, HAVE their, "Merits" !

As far as budget actions, my guess would be Howa, as it is mostly compatible with certain R700 aftermarket items, such as stocks. There is additional aftermarket support for it that seems to be in more abundance than for Ruger, Savage, etc.
The Howa 1500 is a flat bottomed action with metric tenon threads, and is not compatible with Remington triggers, barrels, bolts, stocks, or bottom metal.

I'm betting that you will like the new RR Remington 700. IMO it will most certainly need a firing pin bush job and the handle relocated if you want to have primary extraction. It's about a toss up to just remove the bolt, sell it, and put in a PTG or pay to have it reworked.

tikka's are nice...but it still has NO support close to what rem 700 has. And how many dedicated target guns have you seen built on a tikka? ive never seen one...just hunting or tacticool builds.

My first build was a Remington. It went over 7K rounds before any serious cratering. On the other hand my two Savage Model12 Benchrest needed it done at 1500 rounds. I knew they would when I bought them. Total cost to bush them was a $100 each and worth every penny thanks to Jerry.

With the plethora of custom actions available at many different price points, there is little reason to use a Remington for anything unless you already have it.

Now a CRF M-70 action might be a good value for building into a hunting rifle, and the big CZ/Bruno's are great for large DG rifles. That only matters if you want to reliability of a big claw extractor. If you don't care about that then they are not a good value.

Also, fully truing a hunting rifle action is of questionable value.

My bad. I had read about the similarities somewhere and it seemed true based on the way some stock manufacturers portray their Remington and Howa stocks to be in the same category as far as fit. A closer look reveals the difference. I personally don't have any experience with the Howa, but I've done some reading here and there to determine if I wanted to experiment with one.

Thanks for clarifying. That also confirms my decision to "pass" on the experiment.

Howa's are good actions. I have built on a couple and they are superior to Rem 700's IMO. I was just clarifying that they aren't compatible.

Another reason NOT to choose Remington until they may be re-established, is that spare parts are starting to skyrocket. A couple years ago, a spare Rem factory bolt could be had readily for $125-$150 on ebay or from certain vendors. A quick look today tells me they are going for about $300. Spare factory triggers have even doubled in price!

There are spare Howa bolts on there as I write this for $99. Bolt bodies for $35.

with rem's bankruptcy, its nearly impossible to find a non-barreled 700 action already and surely complete rifles to follow...what will be the new budget action that becomes the primary action for the masses?
Well i dunno but I just saw a Rem 700 SA on GB for 600.00. I guess youre right thats not budget. I never viewed them as budget though.

TRUE,.. Very little,.. after Mkt,.. "Chit" available !
But, my Tikka "Hunting Rifles", are NOT, "Fixer upper projects", or, Money Pits, either !
I carefully, Lapped / Polished, the Bores and "Throat area's", with some JB's , Broke barrels in gently ( cleaned every 5 shots for, a FEW Times ), checked the "Free float" around, the Barrel , Put, a Steel Recoil Lug, in the Older .270 WSM, Put in, a Yo Dave Trigger Spring in the .243 and adjusted both Triggers. I keep, the .270 WSM set at, 2 1/4 Pounds for, Hunting Big Game and the .243 Win is set at, 1 1/4 Pounds for Steel Targets / Varmints. Those Triggers, are as good as,.. most, Timney's !
The .270 WSM shoots, 3/ 4 MOA, (1 3/8 inch groups at 200 yards ) with 3,150 FPS Hunting loads, And the "Cold Bore" shots are near, perfect ! The .243 Win shoots, 87 gr HVLD Bergers in, the .2's and .3's and most, 70 and 80 grain Bullets, SUB 1/2 MOA. Paid, about $650. 00 ish each, a couple of years ago and that's including, the "Lefty Premium"
I could write a Book on all the Dollars / Mod's, I've put into, my 700 Rem's !
And, they "shoot" good too + ARE Fun to Play with ( I have, a New 6 XC "project" action, coming in the Mail ) that I paid $600 for the Action and $150 for, "stock" Bottom Metal, NO, Barrel, no Lug, Stock or, descent Trigger !
My Tikka's, were DONE,.. Rifle/ Scope / parts and ALL for, UNDER,.. $ 1,100. EACH !

What’s the price tag to have a rem 700 “blueprinted”? Asking for a friend! And after it’s bored and stroked will it compete with the big name Bat’s, Borden’s etc...

The Mac Bros stainless action at $575 will be a good budget build. The tenon threads/dimensions are supposed to be changing to better accept prefits.

EVO Stainless Steel Short Action - Mack Brothers (macbros.com)
That's, a good looking Action and WELL Priced,.. IF, it's smooth and Functions well, that's what, I'd buy for a Mid Level, "Project", Rifle ! "Budget Build" Rem 700's that, run around,.. $2,000 / $2,500 by the time your done, LOL ! And NO, they probably won't compete with, a Bat, Nesika or, Stiller, etc.,. Custom Target Rifle.
I mentioned that I was trying to save, a few buck's on HERE one time,.. and a guy said "I was in the WRONG Sport if, I was looking to SAVE, Money" ! LOL,. he was, RIGHT !

The full meal deal could cost you another $600 to $800 above the cost of the 700 action and some of the top smiths won’t even do it anymore. A 700 can be just as accurate, but it still won’t run with a top flight custom. I didn’t understand that advantage until I saw how fast and smooth a good shooter can run these custom actions to stay in a condition.

I received a e-mail from Brownell’s today, that they got a shipment of Origin actions in. Looks like the 308 bolt face is already sold out.

Ill guess that the Ruger action will get a good look now
