Tack driver live results

Jim Cline, Congratulations for taking the bull by the horns and putting on The Tackdriver. I told you last week to watch for Jeff Summers. You said Wayne Campbell. We were almost perfect except for Jeff Peinhardt thinking otherwise! Both Jeff's - fine shooting.

The Tackdriver, from all accounts, was a super success. No matter the discipline, the reception was positive. Nice to see NBRSA President Neary in attendance and IBS President-elect David Mathews, together with some UBR brass. All good for the sport of Benchrest.

Glad to see some Score and Long Range names high on the leaderboard. Seems like there was a lot of interchange of ideas and techniques at Mid-Carolina.

Hope to be with you all next year.

Jeff Stover
IBS President (retiring January 16, 2021!!)

I would think 300 yards would still be considered short range. To make a good mix of it take it to 400-500 yards and you’ll see a different field in the top spots.
I’d definitely consider making the trip if it was stretched out a bit further. 500 yards would be a good intermediate range for both the short range guys and the long range guys. Just my opinion.

It's all in the head. It had nothing to do with the accuracy difference. Look at the different disciplines. Only short range has a mental process to use a sighter target during the match. That was a big big advantage. Score shooters the same. They/we work a target regardless of the number of shots needed. Anyone that came preloaded with a fixed number of sighters was at a disadvantage. Larry Archer did well shooting a 300 WSM of some description. He shoots score matches. On Friday I told my team members to not spend time looking for the perfect load. Practice shooting for score. I should have followed my own advise.

Yeah score at 300 meters I would have had to have something like 20 rounds a relay. Sometimes I shoot that many at 100

I think everyone has made it home safely . I want to first Thank Jim Cline for putting together a great match it did exactly what Jeff Stover had visioned it to do. Congratulations to all the winners you all shot in some no so perfect conditions and showed out . As far as the distance gun type etc there is no fix all for that it will always fall in someone’s wheel house and if a long range shooter had won we would hear the same deal from the others . But everyone who is letting this decide if you come back again or not or if it stops you from coming you are missing the whole point it was about getting all of us together and putting faces with names and laughing and talking and to give some of us a break from our usual busting our butts trying to put on a good show and hearing all the bad as well as the good about what was happening. I had absolutely the best time I could have had . Sitting beside Dave Tooley was a blast meeting shooters and Board members from other shooting organizations was worth the trip . Did I shoot like I wanted to no . Did I shoot like I prepared for the match absolutely. Again congratulations to the winners you earned every dollar you won the ones that had to split it with Roy you deserved extra . Last but not least the Sponsors who made all this possible as well as the Mid Carolina Gun Range I say a big Thank You you made it all happen looking forward to next year to make more friends and I hope I prepare a little more for next years probably not but I can hope . Again Big Thanks You to Jim Cline for making Jeff Stover’s idea come to life .

The more I read this thread, the more disappointed I become by having to cancel My trip.

As for the discussion as to why, or how the short range combinations did well, it all goes back to Precision. Precision as defined by a rifles/shooter combination to stack one bullet on top of another on a consistent bases. Most of us Short Range Shooters refer to this as a Combination‘s Agging Capability.
This holds true in either short range Group or Score.
300 meters is still in the realm where an experienced Benchrest Shooter can get a good read on conditions by way of his windflags, combined with watching the mirage flow. If you know what the conditions will do to the bullet in flight, and you have a superior Agging rifle, you will have a good chance of being at the top.
BC means little at this short of a range. I would venture a guess that every shooter who stayed near the top had a rifle that was capable of that magic “sub .200 Agging Capability”. That does not mean shooting an occasional good group and saying you have a rifle that shoots “ones”. That means having a Rifle that is capable of doing that every time. There are only a few chamberings that will do that.
Take that rifle, a good set of flags, and the ability to decipher what they are telling you, and you have a good chance of staying in the hunt.

If the range is extending out to 500 yards, where flag reading becomes much more difficult, Rifles with higher BC combinations will start to take over.
Or, you could simply ban the use of windflags.

Sounds a lot like dumbing it down to me Jackie , I personally liked the format because it had very few rules , 300 metres , bring what you think will win and get busy, handicapping never promotes any innovation only promotes figuring ways to get around the rules.
This was a great format and a good crossover match, my guess is shooters will already be thinking about what they need to do next year to improve
Again , great Job Jim , looking forward to next year

All I can say is WOW! Thanks for all the kind words and "Family Reunion #2" announcement will be coming out shortly to those that didn't attend #1. THERE WILL BE A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT WITHIN THE NEXT 48 HOURS ON HERE AS FAR AS DATE /TIME AND REGISTRATION PROCESS!

I was being facetious in that last sentence.
My policy is, if I have a Rifle on the Bench, I have my flags out front.

I feel like you just discovered the precision shooting world's version of "Hold my beer and watch this"!

Can I quote that/you? That phrase really appeals to me!
Discovered? You should see the STUFF I have around here. Probably 75 reamers I may never use again. Enough bullets to shoot till I'm dead. Powder- more than enough. Already doing what if's to determine what new and improved STUFF I need. I had too many 9's that missed being 10's by less than .050". Of course it didn't matter that I shot in one match this year and no practice before Friday.

Very well run match, and what a great bunch of people there from the different disciplines - it was great! I sure enjoyed shooting a match like this, which was so different than I was used to - I can't believe how much I learned. Dave Tooley, Jackie Schmidt, and others are so right when they say using the sighters and reading the wind flags were where it was at in these conditions. I've shot many 1000 yard targets in the past that were better than what I was able to do here at 300 meters.

My hat is off to the shooters who excelled at this match in these conditions, since shooting quickly and just holding over for the wind when conditions change, like I usually do at long range, instead of going back to take more sighters sure didn't work here for me. I obviously did not pay near enough attention to the flags, and didn't go back to take sighters at all like the short range guys did, so it was very impressive to see how these shooters did that in these conditions. Instead of getting discouraged, now I am really motivated to get a good set of flags and start to learn to use them. I'm also motivated to try to start shooting some short range matches, which will definitely be a learning experience, and a lot of fun!!

Or.... just have a sight in period, not going back to the sighter...... jim

But, the field would still be level.
Yes, it would not yield the highest scores but still fall into the Reality Realm of field shooting, or F. CLASS, or High Power.
