March 10-60 Vs NF Comp 15-55. Which do you prefer for F class and why.

I don't think so. ED and Super-ED are pretty distinctive monikers. Also Nikkor (Hikari Glass) produces optical glass for anyone who buys it.

You will notice that Schmidt Und Bender do not have ED or low dispersion glass. Or if they do, they don't mention it.

Apparently they are two major Japanese glass makers and then Schott glass that are used in a large sum of the top scope manufacturers.. This is true if you are sporting "ED" glass or not...

Much of the quality is with the grinding of their glass after the fact and the coatings..

Nikon's spin in a press release, talking about their SuperED glass: "....While the optical properties of this new glass closely resemble those of fluorite, Super ED glass is more resilient to rapid temperature changes (thermal shock) and not as susceptible to cracking as the crystal structure of fluorite. Super ED glass also boasts a higher refractive index than fluorite, making it highly capable of correcting aberrations other than chromatic aberration.

I believe I read somewhere before that glass used in scopes like Swarovski uses fluorine coatings and not fluorite glass..

I've read multiple places about how grinding is much better, across the board, than it was just a few years ago. This is supposedly due to improvements in grinder technology. It does seem that even inexpensive optics can have pretty decent glass. Much different than a few years ago. Mfgs of premium glass are using essentially the same equipment to grind, now. I'm certainly not saying that all glass is equal, but that for a price and with the right coatings...I'd bet most makers could produce glass that's pretty equal to even the best names in the business.

Ohara makes some of the best optical glass in the world, to include the extraordinary S-FPL53 Super-ED glass which rivals fluorite in its optical qualities. Guess who, along with Canon, Olympus, Panasonic, and Fuji is a major customer of Oharao_O

Well, seeing as contrary to ED glass, I cannot find where Nikon invented Super-ED glass, I would think they belongs on that list.

As I said in the other thread; incestuous relationships.

ETA: Now we await Ultra-ED glass.

The Super/Special ED is placed there for bragging rights. It is nothing more than latest technology in ED glass.

I think I've gotten ED from reading all the post on this thread.
In your case, ED stands for Exclusionary Discombobulation.

It is cured by logging off the computer, shutting it down and retreating to your safe with a copy of Golf Magazine and Modern Quilting. Makes sure there are a lot of pictures of puppies around you.

I gathered that. The big leap was ED glass to begin with, after that it's incremental. After Ultra-ED, we'll get Ultimate-ED and "I can't believe it's not fluorite glass," and so on. After that, it will all be electronic.

Hoya produces their version of ED glass, designated FCD1, and China has one listed as FK61. Both are close to the Ohara FPL-51, but not equal to the Ohara FPL-53, which is the best of the best.

So, they put the best of the best in the March-X High Master. This has just rendered worthless my March-X non-High Master with run-of-the-mill ED glass.

:( :D

Digitalization is in the near future. Digital elevation, windage, etc. Ray Dennis is working on it right now:cool:
