NF Comp 15-55x52 or March. HM 10-60/Majesta 8-80x56

For what it is worth, the overwhelming choice at the NBRSA VFS Nationals is the NF 15x55 Competition.

I this type of Competition the single most important aspect of a scope’s performance is its ability to hold point of aim. If it will not do this, it is useless. Of course, the same can be said for Short Range Group Shooting.
I have both March High Master 48x scopes and NF Comp 15x55. For this type of Competition, I think the NF has the edge. But then, that might simply be because I have had a pretty good year with the one on my VFS Rifle at this time. The NF thin cross hair is just about perfect for Short Range Score Shooting.

Good shooting at the Nationals Jackie! Congrats!

I am still surprised that NF dropped the fixed power 42x44. My eye seem to prefer the NF coatings and colors. I am also surprised they have not developed the Competition line since the release. Now they let the competitors eat their lunch. I think there is room in rimfire and SR BR to bring this back and develop something competitive with the Majesta.

Two reasons that NF dropped the 42x44.
First, they missed the fact that the trend was toward more magnification. I had two of them, and in all honesty, I thought the old Leupold 36x BR was better.
Second, they were not as rock solid as many believed. I had one on my 30BR and it stopped holding point of aim in short time. I sent it back to NF, had it “fixed”, and sold both off and bought the then new.March HM 48’s.

We have seen so many evolutions in Scopes in the past 10 years that it is difficult to keep up. Keep in mind, I was shooting Benchrest when March first hit the Market and Kelbly was the principle supplier. Their advertising was borderline comical, their first offering was in 40x and 52x. The 40 was about as good as it could get. The optics of the 52 was terrible, even for Short Range Benchrest. Everybody knew it, they simply missed something with the glass.
Since then, Deon Optics has grown into what it is now. I personally think they went through a learning curve, figuring out exactly what the market demanded.

Add to that now everybody and his grandmother is now making scopes. It’s almost on the same curve as actions. Many of us have been around long enough to remember when you had few choices. Now, due to the advent of CAD/CAM manufacturing, there are so many action manufacturers that choosing can be an overwhelming task.

The shooting community has always been a follow the leader endeavor. We get convinced that what worked just a few years ago are now antiquated relics, and we must have the new and improved latest offering. But, is that always true? Looking at two of the top four shooters in yesterdays 100 yard VFS results, one is shooting a rifle based on a 30 year old CPS action, and another is shooting an old R/L Farley of 1998 vintage. The darned thing doesn’t even eject.

But that is marketing. Historically, the first thing any manufacture has to do in order to sell his product is to convince the buyer that what he has simply is not good enough.
