Why the cut out on the bench?

I tend to agree with you, I don't think in the video Bart is sitting as square as he would like. But remember it's a video that he had to make. When I say square I mean 90 deg to the stock with my shoulder. Just the way I prefer. Could be it easier on my neck, leaning forward rather than sideways. I do have a plate in my neck.

Had to make? It was filmed in his shooting house, on his property, where he lives, at his bench with his equipment on it.

Keep in mind, Bart is a pretty hefty fellow. He is in a position that allows him to keep the main portion of his body off the rifle.

I just got back from the range and contemplated this question while I shot today. the cut out in the tables is so you can get your eye and body behind the rifle yet have the table extend far enough to still provide a support for the elbow of your trigger arm.

Still seeing a jam when that narrow portion of the form hits the wider pored concrete bottom portion when form is pulled up.
But my wife tells me I’m wrong a lot!

Thanks Mike. As it happens you can sit behind on mine, without moving the bag. That was the reason for the step out that the bag sits on. In the process of building it I also discovered that having the top of the rear leg attach under the center of the bag ears is probably the best position. You can comfortably straddle it when shooting behind or beside. Sometimes we get lucky. The rear leg sockets are all welded to a single plate with an extra socket between those used in four leg configuration, to allow it to be used with three legs. Having set it up both ways, I can report that four legs, with one adjustable, is the most stable.

You do realize that the extra step in Boyd’s bench is to allow him to get behind the rifle more? Does that make Boyd a “behinder” too?

Well clearly if your shoulder is against the butt plate your behind it. I was thinking setting “behind” the bench was more like this.

Not necessarily, at least not to me. Your shoulder may be behind it, but not the shooter.

Great. I am innately qualified to clear this up. It would be easier and more fun without the keep it clean restriction, but I will give it a shot any way.

The answer to each question depends on whether you are democrat or republican.

“Behind”- the only body part required to be a male or a female.

“Behind”- What Donald Trump was not in lawfully cast votes when the election was stolen from him.

“Get on top of the gun”- A simple phrase often used in discussing their ultimate goal to repeal the 2nd Amendment and remove all guns from law abiding American citizens. “We have got to get in top of the gun problem.”

“Get on top of the gun”- The most effective way to resolve the border crisis.

I prefer the "U" shape if it is wide enough to slide in easy. I shoot elbows out on each side, the space in front on each side provides plenty of room to spread my stuff laid out to suit.
The pork chop works out shooting varmints, because mine is a portable bench that folds up.
I saw a gentleman one afternoon shooting out of his sunroof on his P/U. First shot (220 Swift by the way) burned the paint off, about four inches wide from windshield to hood ornament. That was the first time I wished I had a cellphone to do a video of...

A couple of things about my experience behind: It turns out that you have to move the scope back, and for me, the recoil hit me in the collar bone, so since I am quite comfortable with my shoulders at a more acute angle to the CL of the barrel, that is how I shoot. (still straddling the leg) I have made a hobby of studying bench design, after doing a lot of work building a firing line. At that time I knew nothing about bench design and since the one we used was approved by the shooters that competed at the Visalia range, and our club was cooperating with them sharing bench forms, I built forms for that design. The prototype form, was done by famed benchrest stock maker Lee Six. I was a lot younger and was in no position to evaluate the design or challenge it. Since then I have studied a lot of benches and learned a lot in the process. Here is a design that I think is pretty good. It gets the back of the base more out of the way.

I think that bench was designed and made by Bo Peterson of Sweden and if my memory is correct the mould consists of 3 parts, if you look closely, you can see bolts at the front edge of the forward upright edge.
It also looks like it splits at the rear where the two tabs are on the back of the bench top and possibly the right hand edge of the rear of the vertical support, and the front part of the form looks to split on both sides and pull away.
Bo would be only to willing to give further details.
