Which Dog makes the best shop,, life, shooting companion?

People always look at you funny when you say American bulldog. I tell them, imagine an over grown pitbull on steroids, that's what the look like. Solid is an understatement. The one pictured riding shotgun in my truck was 110lbs and not an ounce of fat

exactly
people only think bulldog or pittbull, they don't understand there are probably 20 different recognized variations. And they all have a different purpose.

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg This is my #1 girl!!!! 4 years old and 80 pounds of solid LOVE. Of all the dogs we've had over the years, this is the truest FAMILY dog ever. She spends time with all of us every day and still finds time to take naps, snore and fart none stop. "Tuffy" is my queen!!!

She was also known as the 10 thousand dollar dog for laughs as we had a few major surgeries . She hurt her back at 9 years old. Cost 3500 for surgery. Every one thought that we where crazy. Best money I've spent.
We are dogless right now. One reason is that Microsoft Money allowed me to total up the cost of the last one. Over 14 years, that "free" dachshund cost us a touch north of $23,000.

My reason to be dog-less too...and all the landmines in the backyard..

My dad (a true dog lover) told me years ago that any life without a dog in it had a huge empty hole in it, and I agree. You can't use money to put value on life with a companion dog, it's one of those things that defies logic and reason.

Don't mind the backyard land mines either, the look on my girls faces every time I look at them negates all the mine clearing and vet bills. It's the kind of love that keeps on giving.

How could you not smile upon seeing this?

I rest my case.

I often tell people a story of how my wife's upbringing and mine were different. (She'd really like to fill that empty spot left when Fritz died.) When she was a child they had a Welsh Corgi. It was the most wonderful dog in the world. She has many fond childhood memories of times with that dog. When I was a child, we never had a single dog. In fact, there were never fewer than six of them. We had bird dogs, squirrel dogs, deer dogs, house dogs, probably coon dogs and hog dogs at some point. Furthermore, growing up in Florida, you learned to not become too overly attached to one dog, as the heart worms tended to kill them within about 6 years. I've probably helped bury more dogs than the average guy. Also, because of difficulty controlling tics and fleas, the "outside dogs" were very seldom allowed in the house. From the time I was about 12, one of my household responsibilities was to feed and clean up after the dogs in the kennels. The day I went off to college, I realized that I was free of all that and it was like a prisoner having his shackles removed. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the crazy antics of our dachshund and I do like other people's dogs, provided that they are friendly. However, my upbringing has preconditioned me to look at dogs objectively and to be able to balance the costs and benefits of owning one. Right now, I don't have an empty spot in my life so big that I need a dog to fill it. Besides, it wouldn't be fair to the dog to board it when my wife and I go on extended trips.

Border collie, beagle and German shorthair in that order. Was raised with a Border collie on a farm. That dog was smarter than most people I know! Incredible how intelligent and loyal they are. Almost human...

Loved my beagles and shorthair though.

We've got 2 females...a little choc/white cocker spaniel and a choc lab. They are awesome and I wouldn't trade or get rid of either one of them for anything. However, I've had to put 2 down in my life and every time I go through that I question if it's worth it. I just get to dang attached to them. Part of it is my wife and I don't have kids so to say their pampered might be a bit of an understatement :) The lab is my hunting buddy and she will pick up anything I shoot...she just loves to duck hunt and I love taking her and watching her do her thing.

Having said all of that...every once in a while I say these are it. Because I know how heart wrenching it will be when we lose them.

The answer to the OP's question is simple: mine. This is 6 year old picture, but she is still going strong and keeping me company when I'm reloading.

Several shooters probably recognize Layla from the MO F-Class State Championship match last year.

She is a mix breed Lab/Beagle stray that I found over 8 years ago. I'm sure glad our paths crossed.
