MY BEST FRIEND

I have had Norman a German Short Hair Pointer for some 12 years. He originally was my ex wive's dog and she gave him and a female to me. Since then Jenny passed away some 4 years ago and now Normy is nearing the end and I cant believe how hard it is hitting me. I just would like some prayers he makes it through this weekend but I just don't know. His hind legs are getting very weak and that is what we will judge when to put him to sleep. I know this is off topic but our Dog's are man's best friend . Dog's only ask for kindness and food and a nice place to sleep yet they never judge us they only Love us from birth till the end. We ought to have a national holiday to honor every Dog(God spelled backwards) like service Dog's right on down to lap Dog's. They can be bad but we forgive them immediately, they can be sneaky but then we laugh. We are sick and they will lay right in your bed till you recover. They protect you right up to a fight and will give their precious life to protect us. They are a gift from God.
Prayers to you guys...that is never easy...they truly are our best friends...I love my dogs more than just about anyone, as I'm sure you do too... The best to you guys during a rough row to hoe.

Very sorry to hear this....I had a shorthair many moons ago when there were a lot of quail here. He was a fun dog to hunt with because he kind of "did it all"...they really are versatile dogs. He would find a covey, point a rabbit and could find a woodcock like no dog I have ever seen. Wish I had another one like him. I am sure you feel the same way.
Best thing I can say is find a puppy and start over, at the very least you {like all of us} can use the exercise!!!!!

Edit: people often say, "you think more of that damned animal than you do of people"....yep, never had a dog stab me in the back, cant say that about some of my "friends"

One of the hardest things I have ever done is to put down a Blue Healer we had for about 12 years. That dog was smarter and more productive than most people I have known. I'm not a superstitious person but I would see a flash in the trees out of the corner of my eye for a few years after that and I could of sworn it was him making his rounds.

Rudyard Kipling said it best:

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find - it's your own affair, -
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!),
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone - wherever it goes - for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear!

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent,
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve;
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long -
So why in - Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Very sorry to hear about Norman Jon. Ive lost some Dogs who were my best friends so I know the feeling. I hope you can think of all the Good times you two had together.

I lost my GSP in September last year 6 weeks short of her 11th birthday. She had been with me since she was a pup. For 6 months I had nursed her through and after a ruptured cruciate ligament operation that cost me a Kings Ransom (but I was prepared to pay). For 3 months I even slept on the floor with her so she didn't have any accidents (she couldn't walk very well for a long time). Only to be struck down with kidney failure - both of them. Diagnosed on a Friday and gone the following Monday.

That was 8 months ago now and I'm not yet over it. Sometimes I do wonder if I ever will get over it. She spent more time with me than my wife! I am not sure I will ever have another dog as I am in no hurry to endure such pain again. Her death hit me in a way I have never felt before and I have had a lot of friends and family members pass in my time.

But death is part of life - it's going to happen and for the most part we deal with it. But it sure hurts like hell and doesn't get any better.

For the original poster in this thread, I do feel for you and hope it works out OK with the legs. I have a soft sot for GSP's. Ron's quote of Kipling above does say it all though!

I lost my shorthair Duffy 2 weeks tomorrow. He was 11 on St. Pats day and first dog to pass without another to back it up. It was the worst of many because I didn't have one to fall back on. I have 2 pups coming-male Shorthair on 7/4 and a female Griffon a month later. Helps to ease the pain if you can find another ASP. I'll never be without 2 dogs again.
