Yeah, I'm with you. Low recoil makes up for a lot.Average is average. Match Champion for the 2020 NBRSA Nationals in October at Sloughouse shot a 6 BRA. It was windy enough to blow one of his shots almost off paper.
A 300 WSM will hold its own against a 6 BRA in light gun for five shot groups at 1000 yds in average conditions and beat it in poor conditions. So will the 6.5s and 7s, though I think the 30s win out overall in poor conditions--but I am biased.
However, at 600 yds the 300 WSM isn't great vs a 6 BRA, even in LG. And when shooting a 17 lb LG in 300 WSM for NBRSA HG (10 shot groups), it is not good at all. It just moves too much to get all 10 shots in the same micro condition. I tested all that earlier this year. On the other hand, a true heavy 300 WSM is very competitive for 10 shot groups at both 600 and 1000, as
none other than Bill Johnson has demonstrated to us this year.
To that end, right now I can shoot my LG as either a 6 BRA or a 300 WSM. I am also building an HG that will go either 300 WSM or 6 BRA. (30 cal barrel is in my lathe as we speak.) My thought it unless the conditions are bad, the 6 BRA is the go to LG. And unless the conditions are really good, the 300 WSM is the go to for HG.
I just don't see the 6.5 Creed fitting well in LR BR. It has more recoil that a 6 BRA in LG, and it doesn't have the case capacity to shoot the high BC bullets that can be an advantage in HG. That said, Bert Croy always does well with his 6.5x47 at 600 and he did very well at the Nationals at 1000 this year as well........
All that aside, the barrel that winds up with the best tune usually seems to do the best. And low recoil makes up for a LOT of BC......
I've abandoned the 300 WSM for F Class. May revisit it at some point but the BAT VR (which the 300 WSM barrel was screwed into) I think is a little light for that caliber and even at 19 lbs I was getting knocked around. The 300 WSM was after trying 6.5 PRC. Could never get 6.5 PRC to shoot the way I wanted (1/4 MOA or less consistently). Thought it might be the barrel, picked up another in 32 1.25 straight. Nope, shot the same. That's when I had the bright idea of 300 WSM. It shot much better than the 6.5 PRC but if I do revist it, it'll be with a dedicated heavier action, stock and a RAD built to the absolute weight limit.
So I picked up a standard bolt from BAT (just across the border in America, Post Falls specifically) for that action and chambered one of those 6.5 PRC barrels in 6.5 Creedmoor. I had low expectations. Color me surprised when picked a load that was shooting well in another gun and it was shooting nearly one hole groups at 200 yards. It really does give the 6 BRA (built on a Havercamp and X-Ring stock) a run for it's money.
Only shot that rifle as a 6.5 Creedmoor in one match so far. I was about 6 or 8 points in the lead going into the last string when the wheels came off. The wind changed and the flags were lagging. Dropped 10 points. The guy closest to me was in the relay after me. He was shooting his brothers 6 BRA. Either the wind stabilized or he read the conditions correctly and he got me. Shit happens. I don't think I would have done any better if I'd brought the 6 BRA with me.
So back to Idaho. Idaho has BAT. Great actions and very nice folks. Anyone who moves to this area is required to shoot BAT actions. Refusal to do so results in immediate suspension of refugee status and deportation.
