What’s with the hate for 6.5CM in some circles?

Average is average. Match Champion for the 2020 NBRSA Nationals in October at Sloughouse shot a 6 BRA. It was windy enough to blow one of his shots almost off paper.

A 300 WSM will hold its own against a 6 BRA in light gun for five shot groups at 1000 yds in average conditions and beat it in poor conditions. So will the 6.5s and 7s, though I think the 30s win out overall in poor conditions--but I am biased.

However, at 600 yds the 300 WSM isn't great vs a 6 BRA, even in LG. And when shooting a 17 lb LG in 300 WSM for NBRSA HG (10 shot groups), it is not good at all. It just moves too much to get all 10 shots in the same micro condition. I tested all that earlier this year. On the other hand, a true heavy 300 WSM is very competitive for 10 shot groups at both 600 and 1000, as
none other than Bill Johnson has demonstrated to us this year.

To that end, right now I can shoot my LG as either a 6 BRA or a 300 WSM. I am also building an HG that will go either 300 WSM or 6 BRA. (30 cal barrel is in my lathe as we speak.) My thought it unless the conditions are bad, the 6 BRA is the go to LG. And unless the conditions are really good, the 300 WSM is the go to for HG.

I just don't see the 6.5 Creed fitting well in LR BR. It has more recoil that a 6 BRA in LG, and it doesn't have the case capacity to shoot the high BC bullets that can be an advantage in HG. That said, Bert Croy always does well with his 6.5x47 at 600 and he did very well at the Nationals at 1000 this year as well........

All that aside, the barrel that winds up with the best tune usually seems to do the best. And low recoil makes up for a LOT of BC......
Yeah, I'm with you. Low recoil makes up for a lot.

I've abandoned the 300 WSM for F Class. May revisit it at some point but the BAT VR (which the 300 WSM barrel was screwed into) I think is a little light for that caliber and even at 19 lbs I was getting knocked around. The 300 WSM was after trying 6.5 PRC. Could never get 6.5 PRC to shoot the way I wanted (1/4 MOA or less consistently). Thought it might be the barrel, picked up another in 32 1.25 straight. Nope, shot the same. That's when I had the bright idea of 300 WSM. It shot much better than the 6.5 PRC but if I do revist it, it'll be with a dedicated heavier action, stock and a RAD built to the absolute weight limit.

So I picked up a standard bolt from BAT (just across the border in America, Post Falls specifically) for that action and chambered one of those 6.5 PRC barrels in 6.5 Creedmoor. I had low expectations. Color me surprised when picked a load that was shooting well in another gun and it was shooting nearly one hole groups at 200 yards. It really does give the 6 BRA (built on a Havercamp and X-Ring stock) a run for it's money.

Only shot that rifle as a 6.5 Creedmoor in one match so far. I was about 6 or 8 points in the lead going into the last string when the wheels came off. The wind changed and the flags were lagging. Dropped 10 points. The guy closest to me was in the relay after me. He was shooting his brothers 6 BRA. Either the wind stabilized or he read the conditions correctly and he got me. Shit happens. I don't think I would have done any better if I'd brought the 6 BRA with me.

So back to Idaho. Idaho has BAT. Great actions and very nice folks. Anyone who moves to this area is required to shoot BAT actions. Refusal to do so results in immediate suspension of refugee status and deportation. :)

LOL!! I didn't realize I was moving to where BAT is located. I'll have to say hi to Steve. My LG is a BAT B and HG and BAT M.

I just know that some PRS guys tune to near BR levels, and it would be nice if that shows up somewhere.
Oh I know I try to get my load as good as I can no matter what the target size is as you don’t want that to be a factor and we do have small targets at matches. Not everything is full sized IPSC targets. A good load does prove itself at a match.

I always wear my skinny jeans, nose ring and short t-shirt that barely covers my nipples when I shoot the mighty 6.5 Creedmoor. As I carry the gun to the line I walk like I'm chewing a toffee with my arsehole. And when I let those little 140 grain wind ninjas loose on an unsuspecting atmosphere the groupies mob the firing line. It's damn sexy man. :)

LMAO! AND THAT'S A WHOLE LOT OF LAUGHTER.

Interesting that despite its original design intent,
"The 6.5 Creedmoor was purpose-built for match rifles, including the Tubb 2000 and DPMS/Panther Arms LR Series" http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2007/11/hornady-introduces-new-65-creedmoor-cartridge/,
the 6.5 creedmoor has been largely supplanted by various 6mm cartridges (including but not limited to the 6mm creedmoor) in its intended application.
PRS was the up and coming game then. PRS used to be more "practical precision rifle" (i.e. sniper/field shooting). The game has changed. It is now field benchrest, complete with 25lb 6mm rifles.

I understand all the feelings of how the “Creeds” are overrated and are the creation of a massive marketing campaign. I don’t own one so I can’t speak about real world experience but the bottom line is our shooting sports, especially long range sports, have grown in popularity in recent years. Much of that growth is a result of the very advertising many condemn.

When I go to the range I expect to see guys with their “Creeds” along with guys with their AR15’s. Not my thing but I’m just glad to see more interest in shooting in general. When interest in our sports declines, that may well signal the beginning of the end of what we all enjoy. Stick together even if the ejected cases from the guy to your left are landing under your bench and sometimes bouncing and hitting your feet. At least he’s out shooting instead of home playing video games.

Dave.

A week ago Friday I was to the steel range I frequent. There was a young fellow in prone banging steel at 1000, he was shooting a Bergara in 6.5 Creedmoor. I have shot a couple of those exact same rifles. I remarked to him how accurate I thought they were. He told me he had already had it out to 1400 yards successfully. The 1400 yard range is right next to the 1000. We also have 1 mile which I'm sure he will try eventually. He had a new shooter on the ground with him showing him the ropes.

Now that's sexy! Get a new shooter involved! (regardless of caliber).

Perhaps I can offer a slightly different perspective.

I'm not a competitive rifle shooter in any discipline and def not a BR or F Class type shooter.

I was a competitive skeet shooter for decades but at 68 and with a very bad lumbar, swinging that k-80 400 time in a weekend is no longer in the cards. So I started shooting rifles. I have a Rem 5R .308 for hunting and I have a 6.5CM in a chassis just for fun target shooting (and no, I don't have a man bun! haha).

Not having invested time and effort in the past in similar performing loads, I don't give a fig who did what first, who copied who, or what other calibers offer similar performance. Just doesn't matter to me.

I don't reload metallic....yet. So, the 6.5 CM offers me a lot of good factory ammo options (gun loves Berger's 140 grain hybrid targets and Fed Prem Berger 135 gr Hybrid Hunters) in a low recoiling gun that shoots better than I do so I'm always challenged.

Lots of 6.5 CM rifles offered. Yeah, chalk it up to Hornady marketing, but to me that is WTF they are supposed to do. I view this as success.

6.5 CM has fairly decent barrel life and I liked that as I'm not a competitor who changes barrels like their underwear (well, some guys may not change those that often either! haha)

I have not shot out to 1k yards yet but will this next year. I will also be taking a precision shooting clinic (and I may well be the olderster there) and this gun will be very suitable for that. I'm looking forward to both of these milestones and this is my idea of fun right now.

So, personally I'm very happy with the 6.5 CM and I believe that there are a lot of folks out there buying guns and target shooting who are in somewhat similar situations.

Interesting read, this thread......thanks.

my wife says I can’t make a good bun to save my life. Probably because I don’t care, just want it out of my face

Man Bun(ish), tikka, creed, costas, box ammo, this photo has it all

Nah, man....that’s a pony tail and is cool. Just ask any of us who lived thru the late ‘60’s. LOL
Kinda a knot lol idk a loop or something who cares. Can’t do a straight pony anymore cuz it’s too long and I’m not taking the time to go multi bands like the country hippies

Interestingly, I was talking to another LR BR competitor and gunsmith a couple days ago. We were discussing why the Creed hasn't been used for LR BR. He thinks it might be a good choice. It has a small rifle primer and there are a lot of good 6.5 target bullets available. It has a little more capacity than the 6.5x47. It could be that no one was making good brass for it until recently, and still, in average to good conditions the 6mms are REALLY hard to beat.

I don't hate the cartridge, its the "creedmormons" who will approach you to talk about their lord and savior, Hornady, anytime they think you haven't noticed. I shoot a 260AI and am happy with it. Ive shot next to creedmoors on the 1k line and they did ok, too.

At one time, you couldn't throw a spent case without hitting a 6.5cm RPR with an Athlon scope and someone to tell you they're shooting 147s at 3000fps with only 15 minutes of drop at 1k.
