If i can push a 185 jug @2850+ accurately like 5 in .25" @100 accurate with an 06', wouldn't a 06'improved pushe the same jug to 2950?
So how's a WSM or PRC gonna get it done any more efficient?
Keep in mind were just sippin around the camp fire here.
Charge vs velocity + recoil and all?

2850 and a 1/4 of inch sounds perfect to me.

30-06 gets it done in most any situation. I have my a father’s old Pre-64, a rifle I gifted him in my twenties and he refinished, it’s beautiful. I also have his old #1 in 30-06, I use both rifles from time to time for sentimental reasons more than anything But I never feel under gunned. Both rifles are better than MOA at 100, SGK 165s has been the bullet I use in them just because that’s what dad used and it’s effective.

I should add both rifles have filled their share of deer, elk and antelope tags.

I just kind of thought it was odd that there wasnt a case between the 30-06 & 300win mag.in (30cal).get it
I ALSO FOUND IT ODD that the 300wsm was the only case in that capacity for 30cal.
Im aware of accuracy nodes and perhaps the 308 bullet doesnt perform well in that middle range case capacity. Between the 30 -06 & 300wm
But i dont believe looking at load data that the 30-06 can not be pushed that fast, (even as a AI cartridge) and the 300 win mag cant really be down loaded to those levels of reducing recoil.
I thought the new 300PRC may be it buts a big boy .then i thought the 300 ruger compact magnum may be it..if you remember that one.
As for 300 wsm , did they make a 300 wssm also
I dont remember.
Idk it could be a fun new cartridge or its a 308 dead zone with no need or purpose.

I looked at the 7mmPRC
Not a 308 but the case is 81gr capacity.
Could be used, necked to 308.
But i bet its absolutely awesome with a 7mm.
Thats one sexy looking cartridge

The idea of a 30-7 PRC would be fun in my opinion. The 7 PRC is a great cartridge for hand loaders even if it’s not performing on a level Hornady claimed for the most part. I had one built just out of curiosity, it’s accurate and pushes 180 hybrids out right at 2900 fps in my rifle in a lower node. I never did push on it but I’d have to think if a guy necked it up to 30 cal it would do well and is certainly between the 06 and 300 WM.

Drop data is from 26" Krieger throated out.160
I found IMR4955 to be 10fps slower than H4350, drop chart is H4350 data.
Now looking at the video posted above and knowing this information, if i were to improve the ol 06' it's going to hang with the 7prc giving slight advantage to the 300WSM.

Plus improved cartridges are just cool. I’ve had a 280 Ai and a 6.5-06 AI, both were great cartridges, both were bought by friends who still use them today.

I should add the .160 freebore was so I could shoot 200gr bullets, I pushed a 200gr claymore at 2920 during testing.
I will say it scared the hell out of me. Lol

My son HAD, a .300 WSM and NOW shoots, a 7 PRC for, a REASON,.. It just "Outperforms" almost EVERY, .300 Magnum at, LONG Range, except, a very Few of the Biggest ( and Hardest Recoiling, Magnums, with, Huge Bullets. )
Take a Look at, the Best 7mm Bullets, Sierra / Berger/ Hornady,.. from 175 grains to 184 grains for yourself.
He's pushing the 180 grainers, a Min of, 2950 to, 3015 FPS ( 24 inch Barrel ) with, BC's in the "Stratrosphere" and All with, Low Recoil, using a PVA, Jet-Blast, Brake ( I'm impressed and MANY others,.. ARE, too ! ),
The 7 PRC is Popular for, a Reason,.. It,. "Hammers",..
And All from, an 8.7 Pound Rifle, that Cost him about, $2,700. to Put together.

Hello. So what is the popular cartridge around here that comes in more powerful then 30-06, and less powerful then 300 win mag?
What are the options
Or is the winner 300win mag..i just dont like the belted case.yuck! Its an ugly duckling haha

I ve heard Ron Spomer outdoors do an episode about the 270. He said the same thing..i always thought the 270 is kind of a womans hunting cartridge..hahaha..gentle and sleek for her pleasure but im looking for that .30 cal slam.
I dont need a 300ultra mag..i dont even need a 300win mag..
But is there a .30 cal cartridge that fills the power level between the 30-06 and 300win mag
Im not sure what it would be.
If the 30-06 has a case capacity of 68gr.
300win mag is approximately 91gr of case capacity.
What 30cal case holds about 80gr of case capacity. Is there one

And no way an i getting involved with a 338..that has to be the most expensive bullet made..and i dont live near anything i need a 338 to put down.

I did look it up. And it looks like what a few of you have already said.
The 300WSM is the .30 cal. case in the middle. With around 81 grain case capacity .
But that case!..i dont like it..its clunky..

I gave the 300wsm its respect..you know what if that is what saved the 300wsm perhaps it fill an empty space in the power line of 30 cal cartridges.so in that way the 300wsm is doing something no other cartridge does and its not even in the chamber yet..so that in itself is pretty cool. seems we figured out what makes it special

Thats a mouth full. What is the advantages of a rebate rim cartridge. Very interesting choice of cartridge to build around.
So are you able to fit that into a cartridge the size of a 30-06..i just glanced at google images at the cartridge

It is approximately the same length as a 300 PRC, If you stand them up next to each other, Only the diameter is different, Even the shoulder is close to the same. A 300 Win mag action should work well and that is what I will be using for a donor action.

Do you see what im getting at?, im haveing trouble trying to explain myself by reading others comments. Maybe that case isnt perfect for 7mm.. stick a .30 cal in it and it could be the key to something special. An anomalie even..hahaha
All im saying is there is a void..and thats weird to me.
It could be the reverse of the 308win, & 7mm-08
Haha..i like the 7mm-08 more. The 308 win is another clunky cartridge to me hahaha..
What i mean by clunky is when the cartridge is in my hand and i look at it..it just look out of balance to big, inefficient powder burner. But put the 7mm bullet in a 308 win case and it looks correct to me like its more harmonious if that makes sense
Like looking at a 6mm br..you just know thats perfection by looking at it haha

The only 30/06 left in the family got a little long in the tooth and
rebarreled to 284 Winchester. Been loving the .284 ever since.

Agreed, 284 Win, 8 Twist, 180-184 gr projectiles
Newer powders allow it to be close enough to a 7mm Mag it's negligible in difference
Except for using less powder for the 284
284 or 280 AI are pretty much the same performance
I just like the shorter fatter case of the 284
