Whats after 30-06?

OP- assuming you’re sticking with the .30 cal since you mentioned between 30-06 and 300 win mag. You can go 30-06 AI or a 300 wsm and download it a bit to achieve what you want. There really isn’t much offering of an in-between.

Or work with powders like R17 to achieve a little higher velocity. Maybe even use a longer barrel.

I've had several AI calibers, 30-06 was one of the biggest wastes of all. I don't even think trimming was any different. I'd never do another.

I'm hoping the 338-06 AI is a different story. But since I never had a 338-06 and am going with the AI from the get go, I'll never know. The reason for this is shoulder, I think it will be easier to control headspace with the much more defined shoulder and less taper in the body. My thoughts are this will make for a more defined shoulder with this larger caliber???

does the 300wsm case translate well/good to 7mm? That case is not pretty like an '06 but the specs are very good. as in a 7-300wsm?

@ Bobcat,..
My son HAD, a .300 WSM and NOW shoots, a 7 PRC for, a REASON,.. It just "Outperforms" almost EVERY, .300 Magnum at, LONG Range, except, a very Few of the Biggest ( and Hardest Recoiling, Magnums, with, Huge Bullets. )
Take a Look at, the Best 7mm Bullets, Sierra / Berger/ Hornady,.. from 175 grains to 184 grains for yourself.
He's pushing the 180 grainers, a Min of, 2950 to, 3015 FPS ( 24 inch Barrel ) with, BC's in the "Stratrosphere" and All with, Low Recoil, using a PVA, Jet-Blast, Brake ( I'm impressed and MANY others,.. ARE, too ! ),
The 7 PRC is Popular for, a Reason,.. It,. "Hammers",..
And All from, an 8.7 Pound Rifle, that Cost him about, $2,700. to Put together.
7mm/.284 bullets are just very well developed at this moment in time
Owner of Bartlein also shoots a .284 Win for a reason
(I had an interesting convo regarding gain twist with him one time, Top notch Company I must say)

What didn't you like about the 06' improved?
I'm actually contemplating having my barrel rechambered to AI.

Just nothing changed, least wise that I found. now I'm talking for hunting. where this cartridge is at its best, 165 to 200 grain bullets, with my choice being 180's. I was wanting a little more capacity for those weight bullets to gain more with powders aimed at H4350 to RL19. I was still stuck with it having no more to offer. I think the 30-06 case is about ideal for those 165 to 180 grain bullets, if your running 130 grain or less maybe it would show it has more to offer. If you want 220's, well, I think there is just not enough case there for these heavy of bullets in that cartridge for those so never tried that.

A few years ago I had the same question the OP had, a little more than 30-06 but not having to go magnum bolt face. 30-06 AI was (and still is) on the back of my mind, but have pretty much settled on plain ole 30-06, although I shoot my 308’s more since it’s easier on the shoulder. My Tikka 30-06 lite is more for hunting purposes than range work but I do like it a lot. With the 22” barrel it’s launching 130 ttsx at just about 3300 and 168 mkzt at 2850 and groups 1/2 to 3/4 moa when I do my part. Plenty for me and I’m satisfied with it.
