What to look for when a rifle will no longer group.

Can not agree with the mention of using 0000 steel wool and JB or Iosso to clean a terribly fouled barrel. That would be a job for Bronze wool, available at all woodworking supply stores.

While I wouldn't take that to a quality bore, I did once use that combination on a black bore 03A3 that the owner insisted upon seeing steel all the way down. He was tickled pink with the result and checked back with me a couple weeks later, saying that it shot to his satisfaction. Got me a couple more "word of mouth" jobs to boot.

Hoot

I've had accuracy go to heck on a rifle in the past and found Kroil had migrated through the front action screw hole and wicked between the action and the bedding. Cleaned it all out, dried it up, re-assembled and it was back to shooting as well as ever.

If you read Ackleyman II's post carefully he didn't say to use it to clean a "terribly fouled" barrel. I have cleaned many a terribly copper fouled barrel with nothing but JB and snug patches. He said he used it to try and bring back a barrel that is fouled with impossibly hard cooked in carbon, like when nothing else will work. I think he is referring to a barrel that is so caked up with cooked in hard carbon that really at that point it is no good anymore anyway.....so waddaya got to loose??

this measure is of a last resort before you trash the barrel.

Tell us about ruining a barrel with jb- what method did you use to ruin it or did you just hear about this? I have used tons of it as have every br shooter that shoots and i have yet to see or hear of a barrel damaged by jb- and thats a battleship load of finely lapped custom barrels. I do hear this every once in a while but have never actually seen it and the person that brings it up usually hasnt either.

Maybe my favorite post of all time.
