What kind of thread tool is this?

One thing to keep in mind with the insert cutoff blades, when things go south and you and the machine start making bad noises, it gets expensive. Rare is the crash where the blade is not trashed.
Mine has crashed and the insert is so much wider than the holder it just shoots it out while you take cover

My take on parting...take it to bandsaw when possible, lol. Iscar makes nice groove/parting tools. Make sure you keep it wet and chips rolling. My basement machine, I use HSS blades and grind lots of top rake and a sharp edge. Anything that lays down don't like manual speeds and feeds. Key is, keep that chip rolling out like a long coil.

I have a portaband plugged in permanently under my lathe. I consider it part of the lathe. Ill cut my ends off right there in the machine

Bandsaw would probably prevent the need to re check and possibly re adjust setup. Was it bartline that was recommending using a bandsaw or facing .250 off of any parted barrel?

I’d find out if there is a local distributer in your area,
You could probably make a little cash on the side consulting with small/hobby guys. My local supply houses won't return your calls unless you have 15 cnc machines on the floor and haul chips away by the roll off.

I'd gladly pay someone $20 to avoid having to decipher the 7 million different coatings and grades available.

Have you looked to see if you have any independent tool reps nearby? I have one two hours away that reps Valenite, Carmex, Iscar and I’m sure others. I call him up and tell him what I need to do and he’s generally been right on the money. I’m not sure if Curtis Payne is still accessible. He’s the one that runs or did run the website latheinserts.com. He was a longtime tool rep for one of the larger tooling manufacturers and I bought quite a bit from him after he went solo. He used to be active at practical machinist.

Im in on that too. Id love for a guy with extra money to stock tooling that we need for stainless and CM barrels and not all the exotic stuff. He could make a handsome markup and nobody would mind.

I've settled on KC5010 grade inserts for anything steel. Or... polished aluminum inserts. Even the dirt-cheap varieties from ebay produce fine and low stress finish on steel. No, they don't last forever, but for the cost, I don't care.

You would think so, but I haven't been able to find any. I think the problem is all of the aircraft manufacturing in my area. There are literally CNC machines set up in backyard garages making little pieces of aluminum on a contract basis.

Manual lathes and steel barrels don't seem to fall into place very well.

So I poke around on eBay for this and that. If I find something that works well, chances are I won't be able to find the same thing a year later and then I start over.

I bought some internal threading and boring bars from him that work well.

I'm pretty sure I bought the carmex ER60 insert off his website also, but it didn't work very well. It had a black coating and did not feel "sharp" at all. (I know carbide cuts differently than HSS).

I use them for finish passes on critical surfaces also. But like you said, they chip easy on heavy or interrupted cuts.

There’s been more than one thread where many of us have posted what carbide tooling for manual machines we successfully use. Searching and looking that info up should help dial in what’s working or not.

Under a microscope one of my sharpest cleanest cutting carbide inserts looks like the surface of the moon! Go figure!

If somebody wants to stock stuff that's good too.

But there's so many different applications, I'd be happy if they just told me what to buy, I pay a fee and source it from the best vendor. I wouldn't necessarily want to be locked down to what they had in stock or have an 8 week lead time when MSC could deliver it in 3 days.

I have used the full profile thread specific inserts for a long time as I do a lot of barrel threading for muzzle devices. Tool holder is Vardex that I relieved to clear small live center. The other holder for the AR Warner tools is from Mesa Tool and gives plenty of space for live center.

MSC Direct is about the only supplier for the full profile inserts for single pieces as the insert manufacturer only sells in 10 piece boxes , Expensive.
