looking to buy an accurate mechanical balance for long range shooting, what is the better one to have.
I have one on order from Scott Parker, he is busy and I need one in the meantime.
Any help is appreciated.

Not sure I can advise you about which scale to buy in the interim; however, I can tell you that I have an M-5 balance scale tuned by Scott Parker, and even though it did take a while to get it back from Scott, it was absolutely worth the wait. The work he does on balance scales is excellent.

Exactly what I have been hearing all along.
Scott let me know he has an M-5 to tune for me, pretty thrilled.

M-5s are usually avaialable on ebay. Buy one of those and youll have a spare. if you need to go to the store and get one NOW get a redding. Its the only currently produced beam scale I would buy. Good scale I just dont like the flat pan holder.

Personally, I found the Redding to be, well, not my ideal scale. Odd, because for practically everything else I do, they're my preferred manufacturer.

For the price you can get a nice used US-made RCBS 10-10 for, comparing the two is to me like comparing a Ford Fiesta to an F-150. On the one hand you've got something that's really quite lightweight; the other appears built to withstand naval gunfire. As mentioned, above, the flat pan holder is something I don't really understand; in contrast, the pan holder on the 10-10 appears as if it was designed by someone who actually used it.

I would go to EBay and buy any good looking older Made by Ohaus M-5 5-10
I set sent a 10-10 to Scott it is Killing Him ! It is very hard to get right. (still waiting )

I just sold a 5-10 and a 10-10 I wish I would have kept.

Get an M-5 from Scott. I couldn't believe how good a scale could be until I started using mine.

Several months ago, my shooting buddy, who has been very generous to me, dropped a heavy book on his old scale and replaced it with one he didn't like as much. For Christmas, I got him an M-5 from Scott. Now, every time we see each other, he tells me how wonderful it is.

If you want the best, an M-5 tuned by Scott is just that. Period.

The triple poise scale sold by Bair, Pacific and Hornady is an excellent scale.
The RCBS 5-10 and 10-10s are good if you don't have shaky hands. The drum poise is a nuisance if you are a little shaky.
I prefer the RCBS 505.
What do I actually use? I use the AMT/Lyman Autoscale which is an automatic dispenser that uses the Ohaus 5-10 beam with 2 tricklers and an automatic shut off. It is automatic, precise and reliable.

Yeah mine neither -I sold my redding and use an M-5. I've also got a 10-10 both US made. If I absolutely needed the best scale I could buy today and had to go buy one locally I'd buy the redding. It will do the job while you're getting something else. The man did ask for a recommendation for the best beam scale he could get right away. I've also got a few extra M-5s just in case so I wont get stuck without one.
