Not sure I can advise you about which scale to buy in the interim; however, I can tell you that I have an M-5 balance scale tuned by Scott Parker, and even though it did take a while to get it back from Scott, it was absolutely worth the wait. The work he does on balance scales is excellent.looking to buy an accurate mechanical balance for long range shooting, what is the better one to have.
I have one on order from Scott Parker, he is busy and I need one in the meantime.
Any help is appreciated.

Scott let me know he has an M-5 to tune for me, pretty thrilled.

M-5s are usually avaialable on ebay. Buy one of those and youll have a spare. if you need to go to the store and get one NOW get a redding. Its the only currently produced beam scale I would buy. Good scale I just dont like the flat pan holder.Exactly what I have been hearing all along.

Yeah mine neither -I sold my redding and use an M-5. I've also got a 10-10 both US made. If I absolutely needed the best scale I could buy today and had to go buy one locally I'd buy the redding. It will do the job while you're getting something else. The man did ask for a recommendation for the best beam scale he could get right away. I've also got a few extra M-5s just in case so I wont get stuck without one.Personally, I found the Redding to be, well, not my ideal scale. Odd, because for practically everything else I do, they're my preferred manufacturer.
For the price you can get a nice used US-made RCBS 10-10 for, comparing the two is to me like comparing a Ford Fiesta to an F-150. On the one hand you've got something that's really quite lightweight; the other appears built to withstand naval gunfire. As mentioned, above, the flat pan holder is something I don't really understand; in contrast, the pan holder on the 10-10 appears as if it was designed by someone who actually used it.
