Varmint shooting question

When I used to hunt woodchucks up in New York, I used a Harris Bipod only. The reason: we walked and walked and walked. I would not have wanted to carry a rifle AND a heavy rear bag all over too. NOW hunting prairie dogs in Texas, I have a 360 degree swivel bench I mount in the bed of a pick up truck. Takes less than 2 minutes to do it. On the "table-top" of that bench, I use a Sinclair front rest and a Protektor rear bag. BUT I am not walking anywhere. If we need to move, it is a matter of driving.

I do.
Have a couple to pick from, but usually wind up grabbin' the trusty Triad rear bag. Snap it on my belt with an S-Biner, and go...

Harris bi-pod only and get in the most stable position possible. I do a lot of walking so carry only what I need. When the grass is high and I have to sit I have used a mono-pod for rear support on occasion.

Never carried a bag while walking, but have used my binoculars on many occasions. Even a shoe a couple of times!

Yep, that's going in the quiver, pretty sure I'll find a need use it this year too.

Thanks

I found somewhere? a small bag filled with a light material and it has a belt clip. It is rectangular so I can rotate it to get a little or lot of elevation. Use this if walking but my trusty sandbag if shooting off my portable bench . I DID NOT say I used the sandbag to shoot off the roof of my rav4.

I found the source for the light field bag...sinclair, "dog-gone-good field shooting bags". Rotate to get 2,3,or 4 inches of elevation of the buttstock. Just clip on you belt till needed.

I use a shot bag filled with CAT LITTER. very light. sow a pc. of cord to it & sling it over your shoulder. u won"t even know it's there.

I use a small bag - about the size of a 6" Subway sandwich loaf - filled with lightweight 2mm plastic beads. It is filled to about 80% so it is flexiable and squishy. Weighs about 3 or 4 ounces and I keep it in my pack with the ammo and bins.

Check out the Caldwell Field Pod (I think that is what it is called). They come in two sizes, but only the small one is portable enough to (want to) carry in the field. It is a tripod with a rifle holder on top which swivels. The tripod extends to different heights for comfortable sitting position. It weighs maybe three pounds (?) and has a shoulder strap. I also carry a small folding chair with a shoulder strap- though not necessary. Takes maybe 30 seconds to deploy the setup, sit down and be ready for a shot from a comfortable sitting position while having a fully supported rifle which is steady for shots out to 500+. No more bug bites, laying in thorns - and can now see over tall grass. Just the ticket for calling stands as well.

North east groundhogs would die of laughter by the time you got all that stuff set up.

Crappy pair of bino's. lens down, squeeze stock between the eyepieces...ya, I know but when you are desperate....

Otherwise i prefer not to walk at all.

This from the guy who's range finder is the size of a TOW missile ;)

You got me!

But I do have little rangefinders too ;)

I use neither, instead I use a home made cross stick constructed out of 1/2' diameter aluminum rod. I shoot sitting off a light weight portable sportsman's chair.

This has several advantages for me. It gives my a higher shooting position which permits many more opportunities for shooting in hilly terrain, it keeps me off the ground avoiding ticks and poison ivy which is abundant where I hunt, I can get into position within seconds on a stalk since height of the sticks adjust simply by adjusting the amount of spread, with the chair I have four points of contact, feet on ground, elbows resting on knees which makes a fairly stable shooting position.

However there is not question that a bipod used in the prone position even without a bag is more stable and better for shots in the 300 yard+ range.
