Bags for shooting coyotes off of truck hoods.

I use one of these filled with case cleaner media, it raises the rifle high enough that there is no issue with torching the paint, it also gives a good solid rest that adapts to practically any surface. I don't fill it so much that it gets hard, l leave the fill so that it is a big saggy - that lets the bottom contour to any surface.

I assume no patent since there are other variations of this unit sold but we used these in Africa for shooting off of rocks, the ground and vehicles. Didn't shoot any tacks with it.

When I was a teen one of my cousins who had an almost new Cadillac car with a vinyl top decides to rest his rifle on the roof of the car and shoot his very well sported out 98 Mauser in 8x57 rifle. The car was on a little angle making the far side of the roof just a might higher than the side he was shooting off of. From about the middle of the roof he put a nice slice across the vinyl top that looked like you had taken a cigarette and burned it.

Then there was a fellow in my neighborhood that deer hunted with a group of men that all went to VA every year to deer hunt. He was a big fat man that could not walk very far so they sent him down to a cross road on a dirt road on the farm they hunted in his brand new truck so he did not have to walk much. They were running dogs and he could shoot down this dirt path of a road. When he got out of his truck he placed his Remington 742 semi auto 30-06 down on the bench seat of the truck with the muzzle facing the other side of the truck. He pops the magazine in the rifle and when he hits the bolt release to chamber a round the safety was off and he had his big old fat finger in the trigger guard and that little jolt forward of the rifle chambering a round cause him to pull the trigger and with that shot and recoil and him trying to jerk his big fat finger out of the trigger guard he proceeded to fire every shot in the magazine. He blew one side of the seat support away and put three holes through the floor board and two in the center of the off side door. They never let him go hunting with them again and kidded him until the day he died asking if he ever got that truck field dressed.
Thankfully no one was hurt but it would be very hard not to roll on the ground laughing.

I'll wager that a million guys have shot off a truck hood with impunity for every guy actually cited by law enforcement for doing so.

I heard of a few people being cited during big game season. But have never heard of any otherwise. In this state the law is a bit ambiguous as written.. I'd say your numbers are low if anything.

Alright, I am gonna chime in right here. I don't shoot a lot of coyotes, but shoot thousands of rounds per year off obstacles, car hoods, barricades, posts, tank traps, etc, etc.

It you can get comfy height-wise, a bipod in front and good sized rear bag is the most stable. You need to practice of course, and try to get as much of your weight (belly) on the hood. I can do this off my tonneau cover, but not the hood cause I'm too short.

If your shooting off the bed-rails, door or window it is different. You want the rifle supported and balanced like a barricade. A big heavy bag that will mold-over is best here. I run the "Tactical Udder" bag from Fred over at Bison Tactical. They really work well. I have bought, used and sold too many bags to count. This is the best for various random things you might shoot off. Plus Fred @ Bison is good people and I like the name :)

Here is a list of some good bags that work well for stuff like this. I have used all of them and own them too. I personally know the makers of the top 2 bags and have provided input over the years to make them better and better. Short Action Precision are good people too. I trust them and have been a customer for years.

I don't make any money selling these products, just like to help good people who sell good stuff. Feel free to PM with questions.

I was trying not to go too hyperbolic. In the country I hunt, you can drive around all day, every day, for a month and not see a warden. But opening days - different story. Odds then are about 1/100. I've actually been checked for license in the field three times in my life. Two were in NV on opening day of some season (and fairly close to a large urban center), and the third was in CA in the middle of upland game season, and did not end well for you 'umble narrator due to an inadvertant shotgun magazine capacity violation. Doh!

Ah, the 8x57. A useful, balanced, elegant cartridge that gets little love on this continent. It pleases me to know of someone employing it in earnest.

Pretty much the same here, and a few days before shed hunting season starts. Been checked once in the field. I am in Wyoming BTW

I would think that with a Walmart swimming pool noodle, duct tape and a little Southern Engineering, you could come up with a custom design that would fit your needs.

A blast fence for your windshield will need a little more education.

Around here about one second after you turn the vehicles motor off, the coyote is in maximum overdrive headed away from said vehicle. Except for young of the year. The young of the year are really dumb.:) dedogs

Wait until you shatter a front window while shooting across the hood of a truck...... makes for a bad day.
If a person that I know already has a cracked windshield, will that help or not? :)
I shot many times over the hood with a Browning BAR w/BOSS and never had any trouble. It was a 270 win with 110 grain vmaxes.

Dog gone good bags here.....;)

I`ve had mine for YEARS, and they still work as good s when they were brand new.

All those manufactured bags are super cool and look well made. They also look like they work well for use on hoods, roofs or blind ledges. I took a few pair of older camo pants and cut off the legs. Turned them inside out and sewed one end up. Then turned them back inside out again and poured sand inside leaving about 6" from the end. I sewed Velcro on each side of the opposite end pant leg so it can be sealed once filled. This has served me well for years saving lots of money but giving me a good solid rest. Some of these are 30" or longer for window sills in blinds etc. No they aren't as well built as the ones above but they work as well and let's face it, how well built do they need to be for using a pair of throw away pants and play box sand ? They work as well or better than the several bulls bags I own minus the shoulder straps and suede leather/cordura skin. They work. Period. I keep a pair in my side by side Ranger and always have them in my tower blinds.
