USPS Money orders

I currently have over $1000 in USPS money orders in my wallet.

I went to the local USPS branch again yesterday and asked to cash them. The lady said maybe she had enough cash to cash the smallest one ($60) but she didn't. I asked when to come back when they would have cash and she didn't know. Suggested my bank.

My bank won't cash them. they say there are too many fakes out there. They will deposit them but hold the funds 14 days. This pretty much eliminates what most people are trying to accomplish of a cash transaction.

My bank will cash checks and hand me the money.

Anyone else have trouble cashing these?

I just cashed$ 1900. At post office. No problem. Maybe they are just lying to you ?

I have had the same issue with the PO many times. Once, I had multiple USPS MO's from the same person to pay for a big $ item. The Postmaster seized them as fakes. After calling the sender and the PO of issue the Postmaster at my local PPO did a big back-track. Oh, and yes, she was always a B#*@h!
I take them to the bank. Usually I just deposit them there but they will cash them. A bank teller I've known for many years there told me they have a PO money order verification number they can call. When I've needed the cash she calls that number, verifies the MO and hands me my cash.

Maybe you can have the bank do verification?

I am banking at a branch in a grocery store. No manager on site...it would be a lot of trouble to find another bank since this one has my home loan. I've been pretty happy with them. Everything I do is free since I have the home loan with them.

Free? What’s your interest rate on that Note? :)

But seriously. We’re all having to gut our rate sheets right now. Best call and see if they’ll modify the rate on your loan.

The USPS may still have a link online to verify if stolen. They used to publish a list of numbers of MOs that were stolen. Was pretty long IIRC. If this is duplicitous I'm sorry as I don't want to re-read the whole thread.

I actually worry about fraudulent Postal Money Orders. My bank has told me of several they have seen. I prefer PayPal and have never had an issue. I will always use PayPal if it is available for online purchases rather than keying in my credit card number. I hear everyone saying that PayPal is anti gun but so are all the major credit cards, it’s just the politically correct thing for them to say. Bottom line is they all want your money traveling through their hands. Do you think the US Postal service is Pro-Gun?

Dave.

Dave, paypal has frozen the accounts (and funds) of many sellers who they feel violated their "no guns or ammunition" policy. Even bows, arrow, bullets, scopes, and brass has gotten peoples money frozen indefinitely.

Funny thing. My ex Father-in-Law (now 93) worked at the PO right after discharge from USAF. He often talked about the old 1917 revolvers they were issued for employees working behind the counter.

I have heard that before. I would refer you to their policy. It specifically mentions firearms and ammunition. Do you personally know anyone who has had this happen? I don’t but I sure see it on the internet. Just follow their rules. Heck, they even mention the ability to use their service on some items on Gunbroker.

Maybe I’ll have a problem someday but I’m not going to worry about it so long as I follow their policies. I enjoy sending or having money in my account in seconds and buyers and sellers seem to appreciate it too. I listed four lower priced items here in the last 24 hours. All sold. All chose PayPal. The money is in my account and all four items have already shipped.

Just me I guess. To each his own.
Dave.

Has anyone used Zelle? I am enrolled through my bank...so my online app from my bank will allow transfers. Have no itpdea on costs or how it compares with PayPal,

I am 70+. I have never had paypal, too old to start now. I go to my US Bank and get free (disabled veteran service) bank checks for purchases here and elsewhere, as long as I don't abuse the privilege. One or two a month. Never had a buyer complain. I suggest that to buyers, it's pretty simple.

If your bank supports Zelle there is no fee. Not sure if that's true if you just download the app and tie it to a non-sponsored bank account but both PNC and SunTrust don't charge anything.

With Zelle, just like Venmo and PayPal you're sending money to an email address. You really need to trust the owner of that address. They're all great as long as you're certain about that. When she was an undergrad my granddaughter got through life with Venmo. She would send me a text at midnight needing money to cover her share of the pizza and beer. Venmo was a lot more responsive than grandpa sometimes.

Back to the original topic, I will not accept any kind of money order as payment for anything. It's the only system so archaic that I have to take the piece of paper to the bank to deposit it. Everything else I can do with my phone. They also hold the USPS money order the same as a personal check. You would think, based on their charges, that the post office would make a profit on money orders but apparently not.

Our credit union doesn't recognize Zelle, but they do cash postal money orders.
