Ultimate coyote round.

I had this rifle built around the Berger 90's after talking to a couple of Gov Hunters in Miles City Montana. I had been up there hunting coyotes on one of my annual coyote expeditions.

While heading South from Montana, I stopped and bought a box of Berger 90 VLD from Rocky Mountain sport shop in Gillette WY... now that I had a box of bullets.. heck... I had to have a rifle for them....LOL.

Upon reaching a friends house in Oklahoma, and then later meeting Kelly Jackson, we talked each other into building the 22-243AI... he pushed me a little bit and I tilted in the right direction at the right time. His gunsmith in Duncan started building them, and it turned into about 20 rifles for different coyote hunters. Casey...the Gunsmith... bored my chamber out for the 90's.. which I started out with... and need to go back to... but I later switched to the 80 amaxes... only because of thinking it would put the smack down on deer and coyotes better... not sure if that's true or not... I've only been using the 80's on critters. So far... deer...hogs... and coyotes just crumble up.

PS... I'm heading West again in two weeks for my month long coyote chasing... if anyone wants to hook up... let me know.

Take a look at my Youtube Resume... hopefully ranchers might give me a chance on their place.... I'M EVEN GIVING A $20.00 COYOTE BOUNTY.

700 yd coyote hunter killer .... on youtube....thanks..Dan

Small world, Dan!
Kelly is who I brainstormed with several years ago, for this .22-243AI project. I'd been shooting a .22-243Win at the time, and saw a (slow twist) .22-243AI at another friend's out in Nebraska. After comparing cases side by side, I hadta have an AI version! Off KJ & I went about scheming to build one, with a fast twist & long throat. We sourced the reamer, but the FB was inadequate. So when Casey built all our rifles, he throated them, accordingly. The rest...is history :)

Sounds like KJ got you wound up about the .22-243AI, whenever you passed thru!
Glad to see you enjoying that little ICBM!!! Alot of fun times, past experience & interesting conversations went into building what we've determined to be our 'ultimate' calling rifle...

Small world indeed. Three days later after leaving Kelly and heading back to SC... he called me on the road... Hey Dan... I'm going to build a 22-243AI... I instantly said.. Build me one too. He did... and the rest is history...LOL.

Aw, shucks...Dean!

On a different note, KJ has killed more coyotes than the mange.
Blessed to have him as a friend & mentor...

Casey chucked that reamer up & got after it, that's for sure!
My friend here in NY has one, too. Several killers in OK have 'em, plus NM, AZ, KS, and yours in SC, all from the same little shop, at relatively the same time. The fact that so many hit the field at once made getting good data very efficient. And those Okies kill a chit-ton of coyotes, so they knew pretty quick what bullet(s) they preferred...

Heck, I got two .224 barrels in que @ Caseys right now, for a 2nd (switch barrel) .22-243AI project! Been draggn' my feet on that, need to get 'er dun...

I went out to a big field today to test my scope dopes on my 20-250 AI and my 22-243AI... to make sure they were ready for my trip out West. The 22 shoots really good... but Dad-Gum... that 20 really shoots lights out. The drops on both rifles are the same out to 600 yds...even the wind drift is really close... BUT...after that distance, the 22 takes a slight lead.

Those coyotes may be in big trouble from my new quick turret dialing system.

I'm glad you enjoy Miles City. Killing coyotes can become habit forming.:)

Growing up north of M.C. in the 70's there was a government trapper that tried several calibers.
This was a time before laser ranger finders and VLD bullets. At that time there were a lot of sheep in the area and the coyotes were hunted HARD 24/7-365 and the hide were worth good money when prime.
The dumb coyotes didn't live long and you didn't have long to get a shot off.

He used barrel burning, fire breathing wildcats like the 22-284, 6mm-264, 257 Wtby and 25-8mm Rem Mag( before the STWs). Flat shooting was the thing .

Good hunting

Hal

I loved my 22/6mm I was running 75gr amax to 4200fps with a 25" barrel. It was an awesome rig. Seen a savage at the local pawn shop for 220. Thinking and doing another one now just because

The op started this thread with discussion of his 25 WSM so that is what makes me ask this question. What are some "realistic" expectations from a 28" 10tw 25-284 Win running 85-88 gr bullets? I'm wanting a woodchuck rig that will "make a mess" when I hit them !

Thanks,
Mike

You will have to forget about any of the rounds talked about on this thread....most being well over 4000 fps...all of these are way too fur friendly to ever splash a ground hog

Mike, I'm running a 6/284 with 88gr Bergers @ 3250 and it will put a large hole in a coyote. Never shot a groundhog but I image it would be devastating on them
